I cannot say I really like ANY of those choices. The manga and movie was so gritty with not so attractive characters so I think this will look very funny with "pretty boy' actors portraying the main characters.

Thank god Zac Efron isn't going to be in this movie.. Now all we need to do is eliminate Robert from the list and we might have a good adaptation. Either way I'm still going to watch it, but just having those two actors in the talks about this is insulting to Akira.

Wouldn't mind seeing Pine and McAvoy.

Pattinson and Timberlake though? Absolutely not. Mad

Well, I know I'm not watching this one, now to discourage people from watching this movie too. Mess with the fans, get burned.

The main issue I have with these actors is: Aren't most of them around 30 years old? IIRC, Kaneda and Tetsuo were teenage cyber biker punks. Phoenix will be 37 by the time filming starts.

At least Efron would be closer to the original characters' ages.

I concur with this, though I can't fault Hollywood too much (there's still fault) as they're spending a good deal of money to make the film to recoup its seven figure license acquirement (baka). The way to do this is to attract as many people as possible and what better way to do that by using an actor who died in a Harry Potter movie.

What? Robert's not famous for that role? Then what... oh, yeah. Bloodsucker.

Hell, I remember the flak Star Wars got for using a cast of unknowns.

Chances. Sometimes they work.

As for the topic at hand: a change in the city already has me on edge this will be a good production, even if Kloves wrote the screenplay. That's the first stupid step to "Americanize" something which need not be changed.

I get the feeling the motorcycles will be embossed with "Harley Davidson", provided they're not replaced with CGI cyber-donkeys.

Before the inevitable rage takes over the thread, I'd like to ask:
Who is the target audience for this project? It would seem, not fans of the original. Are mainstream audiences really going to want to see an Akira remake?

Hollywood is always way too late in the game for these anime remakes. Remakes of Akira and Dragonball might have been big hits in the 1990s, but that ship has sailed.

They should be optioning something more current like Naruto or FMA.

Is no one bothered that there doesn't seem to be even the slightest attempt to cast Asian/Asian-Americans-etc for the roles? Are they even going to keep the Japanese names and attempt to do justice to the source material? I'm getting flashbacks of "The Last Airbender" all over again. *shudder*

Its not for adults that's for sure. They already said this movie would have a PG-13 rating. I mean I will still go see it because it is Akira but I'm sure it will not be the edgy cyperpunk dreamfest we all hoped it would be.

Just because it's going to be pg-13 doesn't mean that adults can't watch and enjoy it as well, just look at films like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and the recent Rango.

So far I'm not too big on what's been going on with this, but it's not like Akira really has much that's overtly sexual enough to get an R (the old film only had one nude scene and the plot didn't even come close to the rest of them that were in the manga, and even those are passable), and it's not hard to have a movie with a lot of violence put with pg-13.

It's pretty much a middle demographic that's more likely to attract a good number of watchers compared to an R, and even R rated movies have more trouble at the box office anyway.

Besides, I got into Akira when I was a freshman in high school, and I'm sure a lot of people saw or read it before they were 18, too.
