Yeah, not entirely sure the majority of the population of said countries still believe in said religion to be fair. Much less if they're manga/anime fans. UK isn't even Christian, and people who believe in god over here are quite open minded.

Oh yeah, I'm sure he will reply!

Those were some awful questions. I wish someone would have a real converstation with Kato-sensei about the actual story and characters.

I don't get it. Do they mean it's against or for Christianity? I'd assume for, since it's about exorcism, but it got a little confusing towards the end...

And *never watched Eva* what's this NGE controversy? o_O I've heard a little on it, but I still don't know what it's all about...

Yea, this interview could have been longer/more interesting. I learned more from the sketches and notes in the back of the first volume (one of her notes in the back refers to the series as a modern version of Touch, which I thought was pretty neat).

I've been interested in her work since Robo and Usakichi (which I hope makes it over here), so I'm happy to see her making it big. And Blue Exorcist holds a special place in my otaku heart because the original one shot was the first manga I ever tried to read in Japanese and actually somewhat understood (emphasis on the "somewhat" Laughing )

I think what she meant was more along the lines of would Christians mind her using imagery and such from their religion for the purposes of entertainment, which probably isn't going to represent said religion realistically or accurately. Some people are sensitive when it comes to religion, so it's a normal thing to be concerned about.

I'm incredibly happy to see an interview with Kazue Kato; she's my favorite mangaka. Wish it was a bit longer and more in depth, but being able to read an interview with her at all is very exciting!

Yeah, sorry the questions were pretty surface, guys - had to get these out the door quickly (this was done through a translator via email and the final text needed to be edited and approved several times by Kato's managers). This was intended to just be a quick little one-off on the occasion of the show's premiere; I'm hoping we'll get another, longer (and maybe in-person) interview where I'm allowed follow-ups and can go in-depth.

I picked up the first volume of Blue Exorcist and I didn't find anything terribly offensive. Of course, I am not religious myself. I am happy with ANN hosting Blue Exorcist because after reading the first volume and finding out they have an anime series coming out, I wanted to watch it. Thank you!

So long as they stay away from Islam et. al., they should be OK. Though it'd be interesting if they actually tackle those. Laughing

To be correct, U.K. is quite well Christian (biggest religion there; present in protestantism flavour).

I see...thank you~ But what about the Evangelion controversy they talked about? I never watched it, but I have heard something about a controversy here and there.

To be succinct, the creator of EVA has gone on record stating that he just took a slew of religious references and spun them into the quasi-coherent mess that is Eva, employing the classic method of obfuscation to make a show appear more profound than it actually was (Easier than constructing a truly deep plot, but whatever makes a buck). However practitioners of Christianity in particular thought that there was some deeper meaning to these rambling references in Eva, a meaning that did not jibe with the religion, and took umbrage.

IMO, "Christian" themes--especially exorcisms--in Japanese works just come off as horribly done and tacky. Not to mention a tad cliche. I finally watched the first episode (dubbed, had seen dubbed) of Ga-Rei-Zero. Case in point. When viewing entertainment from a foreign land, I want exotic references, not seeing what is ubiquitous in my home country being horrendously misrepresented. It's mildly insulting, and worse, boring. Again, IMO.

Going against Islam would at least get the show some free publicity, just look at the riots in Afghanistan that helped get that koran-burning church into the news. The Japanese thankfully don't seem to care about being politically correct, and unlike America, they might not care if their works hurt the feelings of a bunch of militant nuts in a backwards nation. I'd check any show that got the Islamic nuts who have nothing better to do in a conniption fit, just to give props to someone who had the balls to go against "the untouchable religion".
