Reading this review after having checked the DBZ SD mini-manga has made me realize: to paraphrase Roger Ebert and what he once said about summer blockbusters and Star Wars, from a certain point on, every big battle fought in Shonen manga has aspired to become the next "Goku vs. Frieza" fight in terms of twists, nonstop action and striking imagery, if not really pacing. And invariably, they've failed every time. Not gushing or knocking on the fight from my part, more like asserting the review's statement that the fight has come to represent what makes Shonen fights interesting and cliché at the same time while remaining the standard for nearly 20 years now.

Edited: Nice review, but I still don't get why Kai suddenly ended in Japan when there was one more story arc to adapt

Maybe it's because it's been over ten years since I last saw these episodes (back when they aired on TV) but I didn't need to use the fast-forward button at all. I got totally sucked in, haha...

When laying down on the couch with some time to spare, my Dragon Box is beautiful enough to go through the Freeza fight in one or two sittings in it's stretched-out glory.

But this is great for the both the dub as well as the pacing. Glad I managed to grab this before any major reprints start happening with the music change (Although I know the next sets will be inconsistent...), as from what I heard the choices using the Kikuchi score seem to be less than thrilling (but not too bad).

As a Dragon Ball Z fan, I gotta admit I was also a bit irritated by the length of Goku vs Freeza (I was like "Okay, you have beat the **** of him for over 20 minutes, but still isn't enough to conclude it? By the way the planet says its going to explode, so take your time")

I suspect it's because Toriyama had stopped caring about Dragon Ball by the time he was doing the Buu part so they just ditched it when they were doing what's supposed to be "Toriyama's cut".

It's not as if there wasn't a serviceable "this series is over" moment at the end of the Cell part.

That's a bit of a shame to me because I actually like the Majin Buu/Fusion/Kid Buu sagas. The stuff between that and the end of the Cell games is rather lame though.

Same here. I watched the entire set in one sitting. As usual.

One thing that I found peculiar with Kai is that it... just compresses everything! The good and bad!

You'd think that, if with some careful filtering, they'd try their best to make a definitive version.
No... with this coming out alongside Brotherhood, you just can't call this a quality remake.
I'm not sure if ANN critics have established that yet, but I'd prefer going through their enjoyable filler than being halted with lackluster compressions.

Still, the fact that it preserves the good as well as the bad, which is shown according to this here review, then at least I can watch the next episodes of DBZ and know that my dish of GAR! will be served up hot.

The fact that these 13 episodes only cover 21 episodes of DBZ isn't indicative that those original episodes had little filler content. The people responsible for DB Kai simply stopped caring about tightening the pace and kept a lot of unnecessary, sometimes infuriating scenes that made this fight such a chore to watch originally.

I mean, did we really need that moronic subplot about Ginyu stealing Bulma's body, or Gohan fighting toe to toe with Freeza even though he's supposed to be very weakened after giving most of his ki to Piccolo? That's exactly the kind of filler crap I was hoping DB Kai would spare me from. If the producers did their job right and cut every inane bit of filler, maybe the show could have covered all of DBZ in just 98 episodes, instead of ending right before the Boo arc.

Funny in how in the same timeframe, we see a perfect example of a remake(or adaption in general) in FMA: BD, and we see.... a rather poor, lazy rehash that only exists to remind people further that DBZ exists.
As if the legacy wasn't much of a tip-off...

I mean Toei is obviously more concerned with Toriko and One Piece, heck, even the PreCure series, than any reminder!

Yeah, uh, I really have to question the point of Kai after this. If they aren't going to cut down on the repetitive trash-talking and obvious stalling for time, then what is the editing for?

I think you guys may be understating just how absurdly stretched and drawn out the original DBZ was. I mean, it wasn't just that it had good parts plus bad filler parts. It was that both the good and bad were stretched like crazy.

Would a full blown FMA style remake that overhauls every issue be nice? Sure. But just having a reedit that trims things down to a watchable level seems like a pretty good compromise to me even if it keeps some of the crap parts.

Think of it this way: Can you see yourself falling in love with Kai? They've contorted this pitiful excuse of a remake into something that won't capture the magic of something that did.
Even if those fillers are bad because of today's standards, they were invaluable in supporting, if not enhancing, some of the show's most impacted moments.

You know what you do when you're tired of boring stuff? Ya skip 'em. With your fast-forward/skip button. Tell ya what, it's a HECK of a lot cheaper!

Not having seen Kai, I could fall in love with it if I watched it. I watched up to about Season 6 (or what ever the start of the Cell Games were)

Sure some of the filler stuff may have supported some of the moments, but le me tell you something I don't like watching a bunch of episodes in succession where somebody charges up or does what ever until the end result happens.

I'm thinking about getting Kai, but I want to wait until the prices come down a bit for the set.
