I'm definitely looking forward to this. I don't know how well (or poorly) it did on its theatrical run in the States, but hopefully it will break even on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Redline hasn't really had a theatrical run in the US. Its showings have been generally limited to film festivals or exhibitions at places like New People. What I can tell you is that the movie absolutely tanked in Japan, playing in very few theaters with minimal advertising, resulting in low turnout. One person in Japan told me they saw the movie multiple times and each time the theater was only about a quarter full, if that. It's not a failing of the film. A similar fate befell the works of the late Satoshi Kon as well. They may have gotten international acclaim, but Japan wasn't too interested.
Here's a SPOILER-FREE podcast review of Redline we did with ANN contributor Tim Maughan, in which we delve into the reasons this sort of thing seems to be happening on those increasingly rare occasions that Japan makes an anime title which doesn't cater heavily to the "otaku" market. If you're curious about Redline, that episode might give you an idea as to whether it's for you without actually disclosing much of anything about the film itself.

Man...I love Manga Entertainment. They put out relatively little and yet, they've probably put out more good stuff than half the R1 companies out there. Can't wait for Redline and I hope First Squad follows soon after.

Just like Akira Kurosawa. At one point, Kurosawa was more popular outside Japan than inside. It wasn't until the Japanese noticed his popularity overseas when they thought, "hey maybe there really is something to him." Either that, or since Kurosawa was just one of the then few Japanese artists to be held in high esteem by the West, that they felt they have to like him too.
And this is why Japan doesn't experiment much anymore, when nobody over there pays it any attention!

I will definitely be picking this up. I will use it to create a list of "Anime Films to Show People Who Don't Normally Watch Anime", alongside Summer Wars.

I wonder if this will be a physical media release only or if there will be a theatrical release, as well. I'd love to see both Redline and First Squad on the big screen.
