why do two different dubs when the u.k. and the u.s. speak the same language? I guess it does provide more work for actors in both countries, dubbing over, recording etc but still.. I guess that gives me a reason watch the movie three times.

Well, they're using actors from the UK, and the film is based on a British novel from the '50s, so I'm guessing Optimum wants Arrietty to reflect that. I mean, there's nothing stopping the actors from using fake American accents a la the old Manga UK dubs of the '90s, but I really doubt it.

I'm kinda hoping that the DVD release has both, just so I can compare.
Anyway, as a Brit, I find this both interesting and pleasing. It gets a bit tiring hearing American accents in everything, so I'm happy for a change; especially for something based on books from this side of the pond. |

Hmmmmm... I doubt Disney will put both dubs on their release but I hope they do. I'd like to see this film with its British actors because

As a borrowers fan and as a person familiar with most of the uk cast i will be very upset if i am denied the uk dub

guh. this is annoying. i wonder will both dubs be included on the optimum release? I am going to want to hear both of them.

At the same time, however, the movie does transport the setting to contemporary rural Japan (although one could argue that hardly anything about that house would look out of place in 1950's England). What I thought was particularly interesting though is that while all the human characters had Japanese names (e.g Ms. Davis was Haru and the Boy was Shou), the Borrowers retained their original names from the novels (Arrietty, Pod, Homily). In light of this, perhaps the English dub should have given the Borrowers British accents and the humans American accents a la what they did with Fantastic Mr. Fox. 
In any case I really loved this movie (easily Ghibli's best since Spirited Away) and am very much looking forward to its stateside theatrical run next year, American accents and all. |

That's actually not the first Ghibli film to do that, if I'm not mistaken. Didn't they have different dub actors for Laputa?

I've only seen a couple anime that have been dub in both the UK & USA. This reminds me of how Ghost in the Shell 2 had both a UK & an American dub. Except the American dub was made years after the UK dub was made.
I'm also not sure for it to be a possibility for both the UK & USA dubs of Arrietty to be released in America. It could happen like how the second GiTS 2 DVD/Blu Ray had both the American & UK versions. But I'll still buy Arrietty when it's availble in America. |

UK dub has some good casting choices.
Makes sense as well since it's based on a British novel, even if the setting has been changed. Wonder when DVD/BD will be out. |

I, too, would probably favour the U.K. dub over the U.S. dub, for reasons of the setting (despite the movie being set in rural Japan, it looks more rural England, from what little I've seen) and characters. Still, it would be interesting to compare both versions of the English dub. I've been interested in this movie since the previews were released featuring the main theme song. I had no interest in seeing Ponyo, but I'll definitely be watching/getting Arrietty.

Hmm, established British actors in a story adapted from a British novel, or an American dub filled with whatever hack Disney channel kids are popular this second (and possibly won't be on TV when this comes out) with only a couple known actors around to give the dub credibility. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
And it's just wishful thinking that the American release will have both dubs, no way Disney would allow anything other than their own English version in their release. At least it'll likely have a DVD/BR combo pack. That doesn't mean I don't want to watch this, looking forward to hopefully seeing this in theater like every other Ghibli release since Mononoke.
