I've watched about 7 episodes so far and its pretty good and the dub is better then expected. the fact that Jensen doesn't voice his character for most the episodes sucks but at least the sound alike isn't too bad. Jared also isn't good at matching the lip movements but i guess that's just because he kept his performance closer to how he does it on the show which is fine i guess.

For anime fans unfamiliar with Supernatural, this should be an interesting watch, and some of the points that tweak previous fans likely wouldn't bother them at all.

I have never even heard of the show, much less watched it, so I wish the review had more information about the actual plot and characters. The bulk of the article was comparing the two series and critiquing the DVD's audio and such. That said, for fans of the original series I thought the writer did a spot on job answering questions I would have had. It's a thoughtful review, I just selfishly wish I could have gotten more out of it.

I've never been much of a Supernatural fan, but I like the anime and was surprise to see it receive a positive review. The artwork and animation are good but A is just wow. And the voice acting sound a bit rough, even the dub is more ear-bleeding than your standard dubbed anime, but it's probably because I only watch one dubbed episode.

The final few episodes were very disappointing for me. They were poorly written, rushed (the pacing was just awful, especially in the last episode), and there was more than one Deus Ex Machina. Supernatural was a good series overall, I would rate it as B+, so I am surprised that the reviewer gave it a straight A even though she herself expressed reservations with it.

Clarissa explained it all.

*snickers

I'm glad the series took its own path from the original. It would have sucked to see nothing but the same episodes I've already seen in the live action version.

Not sure yet if I want to own it. I don't even own the original on disk and it's one of the best series I've seen in a long time (though, admittedly, the BD prices are coming down enough to make it tempting to own).

I will stream it once it becomes available. I'm hoping to see it on Netflix in upcoming weeks.

Despite that I occasionally catch an episode or two, I am a complete novice to the original series and I haven't understood what was the appeal of the original series...until I watched this.

I bought the series on DVD and I have to say, this is one of the better American/Japanese anime collaborations and the anime series is very well written and can stand on its own without the need to watch or understand the original series in order to get it.

As for the dub, it's a shame that Jensen only voiced Dean in the last two episodes but his stand in for most of the episodes did a pretty good job at trying to retain the original feel of Dean. Plus, I kept on noticing how Jared's dialogue in most of the series doesn't seem match the lip movement but his excellent performance can make me forgive it.

Also, I am glad that the end of the anime series wrapped up the main plot but yet at the same time, leave it open-ended enough that they may continue the series.

His replacement isn't particularly bad, and is within a similar vocal range, but it's just not the right voice and up against Jared Padalecki dubbing for Sam it stands out.

Exactly. As nitpicky as it may sound, that's pretty much the reason why I could never get into this adaptation... As much as I really wanted to. Confused

I intend on seeing this as soon as I can...and I regret not being able to buy it on DVD when I saw at Target yesterday, though it was sort of expensive. And I think I'll be able to watch it in either language even though I'm a huge fan of the regular series and am happy that J2 (Jared and Jensen) are Sam and Dean in the dub, but I'm still amused that Yuuya Uchida who I know from Soul Eater as Stein is Sam. I may even ask if we can get permission to show this at a local library anime club just so we can have it in the library catalog.

See, this is what's gonna happen to anime too, as streaming makes it just a commodity. Many fans won't feel the need to own the DVDs, just like TV fans. Laughing

I didn't find the pitch all that similar. I felt the anime Dean sounded closer to Sam in pitch which was distracting. Took the first disk to get past that.

BOBBY MY GOD BOBBY
That really got me. Japan can't do trucker/redneck? I don't even care they made the yellow-eyed demon look more link the alien/demon hords of Gatekeepers, but BOBBY.
Come on. He's like dad to the boys. OK, even dad doens't look like dad
I loved the bit on the making of where the Japanese writer who HAS seen the show & IS a fan is arguing with amime people (writer: No Anime person: Just listen to me. Writer: They wouldn't do that) The writer lost the battle on the kappa-the director insisted & then they show the writer "A kappa in America..." It was very entertaining. I can actually SEE a Kappa in America. We do have Japanese Gardens (We have one here in San Diego-a Japanese Friendship garden in Balboa Park) so I could see a Kappa transplated somehow. I also liked the character design discussions (fans like Dean's puppy-dog eyes. They like Sam's lower eyelashes. Wow. Eye to detail)
I also like the question & answer (In Japan, we have a blessing before starting horror shows. Do you do this? The actors were polite, but "Noooooooooo" "We'd have to have a seance every day") Jensen was happy anime Dean is almost as tall as anime Sam. I swear it sounded from the answers as though he was only offered 2 eps (he mentioned "having the chance" to dub 2 eps, but that seems strange)
The interesting bit from the creator was Supernatural is far more low budget than I always thought. He is pretty wowed by the things the anime can do he could never dream of pulling off (that the anime can do a werewolf while the series gets a hot chick with yellow eyes.) He also loved the climax on the shapeshifter since it's Sam standing in the road firing into the Impala which Kripke said they would never have the ability to pull off in the actual series-traffic & all. I listen to extras on each disc first so I know what to look out for in the series when I'm watching.

I'm about halfway through the 2nd disc. It would be interesting to know if they dubbed in order because actually there seemed to be a rough spot on the 2nd ep where Jared sounded a bit stiff which made me wonder if that was the first ep taped. His lips don't match? You're WATCHING that? My god. You do know half the Japanese VA's don't seem to worry about that. I swear I've seen just about all of them miss a start or talk long after the mouth has closed.
Or maybe I was just too freaked out over Bobby. A gumshoe? Really?
