What I want to know is why is Japan so gung-ho about arresting people for merely uploading copyrighted material. In the US, if you get caught, all you'll get is a letter in the mail telling you to stop. I mean, unless they're uploading child porn or something, why do they go out of their way to arrest them?

Well, at least they are doing something. How many people actually stop after reading a letter say "Dear Uploader/Downloader, please stop. Or else... Kthanks". Nothing ever happens so it's like an empty threat, at least in Japan there is some action made. However, the people I know that received letters is the downloaders. Here they go after the roots, the uploaders, in their battle.

I think the "roots" would be the original uploader, not some guy who's just uploading what he downloaded.

Those would be the same people who told their government representatives not to pass copyright laws, but their voices went unheard because the sound of money being counted was too loud.

In Japan, the copyright laws are stricter and it's illegal to upload copyrighted files onto the web, and their penalties are harsher.

Are you honestly complaining that people actually make money off of their own work?

In Japan, it's a criminal --not a civil-- offense.
