A lot of series Sunrise did make bold changes that challenged the status quo of what the series was. They usually just didn't work because it changed what made the series and character work in the first place My-Hime removed all of its comedy, Gundam 00 season 2 didn't have the excellent enemies the first season had, and Code Geass R2 simply made everything over the top.
While Tiger and Bunny looked like it made big changes it really didn't, the characters are all the same characters, Bunny is obsessed with revenge, Tiger is a good natured goofball, Kaede still has problems with her father but they're working on them, and Lunatic is still a man with his own brand of justice. The series has taken a darker tone but it hasn't forgotten what got them that popularity in the first place. Tiger and Bunny is what happens when a team come up with a plan and don't drop plotlines, or rely on shocking swerves. I've really been enjoying the second half of the series(partially wondering why episodes 7-13 weren't reviewed) since it's managed to still be a blast. While some say it's being a bit overused I'm glad the Ouroborus plotline wasn;t dropped at episode 13 since it would have left too many unanswered questions about them. Though from the looks of things spoiler[ only Maverick will go down this season and they'll be saved for season 2].
I also like how they've made Lunatic a bit of a deeper character and I do wonder how or if his character will be fully resolved, though I still would have liked episodes for Rock Bison and Fire Emblem. I hope that's a possible idea for some season 2 episodes. |

I am madly in love with this series. It's the same sort of emotion. You know it has flaws, but you just don't care, you love it in spite of that, or even because of it. And yeah, I fell in love over the course of these episodes. I love the characters, I love the plot twists, and unlike Carl, I like the main partnership at this point, they grew on me.
But why not wait until the end of the series and review the whole thing? Will 21-25 get its own separate review? I'm personally terrified that this series will disappoint me in its finale. I've been hurt too many times by series that I loved. |

Excellent point, and I couldn't agree more. There's nothing wrong with rocking the boat, and I am so engrossed with this show because it does just that. But even I admit that the title "Tiger and Bunny" threw me at first. Thank god for the spring preview guide, otherwise I may never have touched this show. Through these episodes, especially where Kotestu finds his powers are declining, I could feel my heart breaking. I even shed a few tears when Tiger falls into the dumpster only to look up and see Barnaby broadcasted big as life on TV. Oh the irony! The darker tone gave this "buddy" show an edge that made it more emotionally compelling. Lastly, I too, am on the Lunatic fan-boat. He always is given the better lines (albeit short), looks cool, and manages to steal the show every time. I was so happy with the backstory created for him. I think it helps people empathize with him, even if they can't agree with his brand of justice. |

Seconding Vash on wanting a whole series review, it seems a bit unfair to rate a show entirely on its build-up episodes while skipping the mid season finale altogether, though the fact that the show still managed to garner a coveted A range grade shows how wonderfully consistent it is.
Although the Sky High focus episode is mostly disposable plot-developement wise (though I'm still hoping the episode's focus on spoiler[robotics] foreshadows spoiler[Dark Tiger's real form]) it works better than some other shows because EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IS UTTERLY ADORABLE, even Barnaby (eventually). This means that you want to know every single quirk about them and not just how they are related to the plot (which is frankly not all that original...) Also is it Sunday yet? (Since I live next door to the International dateline) |

And herein lies one of the rare problems with this awesome show. Why is it that sometimes when anime are given English names, they use names that would throw off the target audience? Tiger and Bunny is one. The name sounds like a show for preschoolers or a Calvin and Hobbes spinoff. Fairy Tail is another. Its quality is on par with, if not far beyond the Shonen Jump Big 3, but so many will give it a pass because of the title. However, with both of these shows, anyone who gives them a chance will recall the Shakespeare quote. "What's in a name?" I'm not bashing all anime that have English titles, but there is the occasional title that leaves you scratching your head, thinking "who does their marketing?" |

Very much agreed! When I first saw the title I snorted and thought "no, thank you." And then when I saw some stills that made it look like a typical Sunrise mecha show I thought "Meh." Thank goodness for the preview guides! I'd have been tardy to the best party of the season if the reviewers hadn't been in love with T&B from the start. I just really, REALLY wish it had a different title! It's so hard to recommend it to people without getting a ._O look in response! Anyway. This is my favourite part of every weekend: new Tiger and Bunny! (Now, just hoping they don't blow season 2...) |

I agree that Tiger and Bunny is good--not great--but good. I'm also on board the "if not for the spring preview guide I never would have touched what sounds like a toddler show by title alone" boat.
For once I'm close to the same wavelength, to being on the same track, if you will as ANN. Despite being close to the same thoughts, I'm baffled by the story grade of B+. That grade seems far too high, especially when this review itself comments on the story's lack of originality, and that when the plot of Tiger & Bunny is offered the chance to delve deeper into its universe, it cops out. The story feels average, which feels more like a C to me. I concur with this review when it says that the characters are what make Tiger & Bunny stand out. However I don't believe that characters should have much clout when it comes to assigning a rating for story. My opinions on the rating aside, I do believe there is something truly amiss in this story grade when ANN has rated the story either at-par or higher than they did in each of their reviews of GitS:SAC. I didn't much care for GitS:SAC, as I've stated before, but even a dissident of the franchise like myself sees that the story of SAC should be rated higher than that of Tiger and Bunny. Even if the policy of these reviews is to effectively conflate the characters & actual story into one grade, entitled story, GitS:SAC should doubtless still rank higher. Would we agree? T&B is still the best show in recent history, AFAIK. |

I don't know about that, the two major story arcs of Stand Alone Complex were both good, particularly the Individual Eleven, but several of the one-shot episodes were howlers, easily as dodgy as the less effective stuff in T&B. Moreover, it never really shook up its characters the way T&B starts to through the second half of the series, possibly because SAC only had two and a half characters and then a bunch of grimacing tech specialists, I don't know.
I wouldn't want to assign a precise score to either of them and possibly the two scores here were handed out by different people, but even if not I can see how someone would rate T&B highly for excellent character work and SAC less highly for solid espionage. |

Dave, I have to know who you think the "Two and a half" characters of GitS: SAC are. I'd guess either 1. The Major, 2. Batou and half of Aramaki, or 1. The Major, 2. Batou and half of Togusa (I personally think Aramaki and Togusa were "full" characters, though. Hmm, maybe The Major is half a character in your book?

Ha, you got me. I was thinking of Batou and Togusa and... the Tachikomas! But only a half mark for them because the writers pulled a fast one with spoiler[their second heroic sacrifice]. I guess they did do something with the Major's character in the 2nd Gig though, which is more than I remember Shirow himself ever trying... Three and a bit, then?
I actually really like the show, but to me it's definitely an example of plot taking precedence over character, whereas Tiger & Bunny has surprised me by having interesting characters who drive the narrative (to address the original point, which I think I forgot to do). |
