So, the question is, if one owns the original version, is it worth it to "upgrade"?

Still waiting for my local comic store to get this in. I really want it as I missed out on it years back (wasn't into this stuff then), and well I missed out on owning the anime on dvd too for that matter. I did watch the anime as a kid though (on Ytv?), and I have some pretty fond memories of it and DBZ too.

For example, during one battle, Sailor Mars says, “These high-heeled legs will deliver your punishment!” whereas in the Mixx edition she said, “I'll punish you in high heels!” Yes, the former is doubtless more faithful to the original Japanese and cannot be misinterpreted like the latter, which begs the question of just who is wearing the heels, but it is difficult to deny that the Mixx version of the line sounds more like naturally spoken English.

Actually, I think "These high-heeled legs" counts as a use of metonymy.

I should think so. I don't know about you but the Mixx binding was so horrible I have pages falling completely out of mine! That and I never did manage to collect all of them back in the day. So I guess save the originals for bragging rights and get the newer ones so you can see the new art and actually read the books without destroying them on accident.

I personally think it is. I love finally reading Sailor Moon in the right to left format love reading the Japanese names and not the dub names. I actually like comparing the translations between the Mixx translation and Kodansha's.

"without destroying them on contact" would've sound more funny lol! i know what you mean, the books were terribly made...

Still waiting for my copy to ship from Right Stuf once they restock along with Codename Sailor V. The amount of reviews that keep coming in makes me more jealous & impatient each time. Sad

As for the translation issues, like i said elsewhere, while they won't stop me from buying both mangas, i can understand the complaints about them so far and hopefully they improved in later volumes.

This was a must buy for me. Got the last copy of both Sailor Moon and Sailor V that were on the shelves. (I almost missed them though, the font on the spine was so faint!) It was so weird seeing Sailor Moon on my dresser again though. Felt a little bit nostalgic when I took a glimpse of them.

I still regret getting rid of my old Sailor Moon mangas. I'll regret it for the rest of my life lol.

Can't wait for more!

I bought this and the first volume of Codename: Sailor V when I saw them on store shelves. I own a few of the old editions, and I have to say I MUCH prefer the upgrade. The cover art is gorgeous, the thickness is preferable to the thinness of the others, the binding is much needed (I hate how the old ones fall apart so easily), and it's such a blessing to see the actual names rather than the translations.

Honestly, I think only real sticklers will notice some of the awkwardness. I found the high heels comment funny, but I got the gist and I didn't mind; I've seen worse in some current mangas.

From a reviewing perspective the art is not very attractive at all. Naoko's style of the cover is far better to look at. New fans to this I think will be put off by the art, as it is very dated. But... as the manga progresses, so does the art. I would have to say the art is no where near a an "A" level in my opinion. But that is solely my opinion. I had bought the entire series originals and reworked cover versions while on my trip to Japan for a friend. I looked through them all and really did love the new style covers.

Though I really do question all the "A" grades. Is it because the series has more of a nostalgia factor? Or because it sort of "defined" the magical girl genre for western audiences?

Someone who gives Detroit Metal City F+ for art can't be taken seriously, anyway.

Some people don't like the art? That really surprises me, Takeuchi's art is some of my favorite. But I'm rather fond of pointy-styles, and since I don't grasp anatomy in art it doesn't typically bother me that she doesn't always either. I also can't really see where it's dated, but then again, I guess I tend to read a lot of early 90s manga as well as stuff from the 70s or 80s, so maybe that skews my perspective?

Still think it's pretty though...

I wonder, do they explain why nobody recognizes the girl when they transform?

Its Clark Kent-itis. Alien superbeing walking among us? Slap on some glasses, you have a secret identity. That being said, it kind of gets dropped near the end of Volume one, once the main characters all get together.
