It was a really weird movie, but I'm extremely against it receiving "a five-million dollar digital renovation". The BluRay might have had scratches and dirt, and the film at the beginning was really rough in grain, but it looked fantastic none the less. Adding SUPER AWESOME MODERN BROWNBLOOM GRIMDARK SPEESHUL EFFEXS can only harm it significantly. Maybe if they can go back in time and add those things in as actual cel-shot footage, but this only makes me think of horrible DNR and all other things wrong in film restoration. And what are they going to do to the soundtrack, replace America and add techno and house because Germans love this film so much? Guess I'll have to go find out, but from a proven track record in things like this, they never turn out well. At least the BD is untouched and I stress everyone to try it out.

oooh, the "five to eight minutes of new animated sequences" has me excited. while I doubt that indicates them somehow working the Hag's Gate part into it (the most major thing left out from the book-to-movie adaption) there were some smaller scenes from the book I really liked that didn't make it in the movie and I hope this means at least one of them will be included somehow~

I'm also excited and torn. I really wanna see the movie again, and to see it in theaters, but at the same time, "if it's not broke why fix it?" The new scenes are okay, but I'm not sure on the re-animating and other parts.

I'm fine with restoring it, but adding stuff is just not good.
The most interesting thing is that Mr. Beagle will be at all the showings, hope they come somewhere nearby. |

5 million dollars to restore? That seems like an awful lot of money to me, but I know nothing about what the norm is to restore a cartoon. It's awesome that it still has such a strong following. I love both the book and film.

Sounds like I should buy the BD version now if I want a copy of the original presentation, companies don't like to keep the old versions in print when they spend so much on updating.
While remastering classics have very mixed results, after listening to Beagle speak at Otakon last year this may not be so bad. He has a lot of complaints about the way certain scenes were animated and the audio in some spots. This may actually be closer to his vision than the current version. My issue is that there's three ways I can see this being done: - They leave the old animation alone, and add in the fixes and new animation without making it match the old style. So you get jarring differences in quality, but the old film is untouched. - They try to match the new stuff to the old, like adding in faux grain. This would probably the best solution and the least damaging. - They butcher it entirely by going mad on the DNR to try to match the old animation to the new animation. Disney might be able to work magic on their BluRay restorations, but they have Disney money to do that. I doubt that this means they're doing an entirely new transfer from the film either, since they just had one for the recent BluRay. For the sound restoration, it could go either way. I hope it just means some SFX updated or fixed, and nothing big. |

i saw this news today in the Peter Beagle newsletter and was super excited! it's going to be awesome. for people complaining about what the restoration/remake team is going to do, you can send in your comments and suggestions and tell them exactly what you want.

I remember reading the book, it was pretty good.
 I never did get to see the movie, though. I wonder if I should watch the original before they re-release it, I tend to like the rough visual charm and character of older animation than the vibrant, HD hyper-clean stuff they put out nowadays.

 . I just hope they don't take out the swears like the other release did it ruins the effect!

Excellent. I wouldn't mind going to see this on the big screen. I missed out but my cousin (who is now in her mid-30s) saw it when she was kid. I hope I can get a chance to see this once I find out where it's playing.
