Very cool idea, I'm glad ANN decided to release a column like this. I'm glad bamboo came around and saw the light after Fate/Zero's first episode, it's also my favorite series this season.

Hm, I'm kinda surprised she's rating Chihaya so highly. I guess I just can't take it seriously like Cross Game or Slam Dunk because it's about a type of competition I genuinely have no relation to (memorizing poems). Another review that piqued my interest is Persona 4...it just reminds me so much of Pokemon by episode 4 I just end up laughing at this show more then taking it's more serious themes seriously.

Chihayafuru is definitely my favorite of the new shows this season by a long shot.

Fate!Zero & Hunter X Hunter are tied for second. I actually didn't mind all the exposition in the first episode of FZ. As someone who is completely new to the franchise I actually found it helpful in introducing the world & characters. If they had started with episode 2 I think I would have been extremely confused.

The only other shows I watched were Kimi to Boku, Un Go & Guilty Crown. The first two are already dropped & Guilty Crown is on the verge of being so. I think you are giving GC a little too much leeway. It's like the show isn't even trying in the story & character department. I can't believe this is now what is on noitaminA.

Anyways nice column! Smile

Un-Go is far and away my favorite show this season, I just can't wait to see where it leads! It's actually the only one I'm following of this batch... I've heard nothing but good things about that karuta one, but I'm not big on either gaming or shojo anime, so if I do check it out, it'll probably be on home video, not streaming.

Terrific idea for a column, and a boss ranking system. Very Happy I'll be eagerly reading each week, thanks for this neat feature. ^O^

That's interesting! I've actually never heard anyone say before that they prefer to wait for home video if there's a free, legal stream available. I'm genuinely curious-- how do you differentiate the viewing experiences? Is it a time thing? A sub/dub thing? Or do you like being able to skip around/fast forward through episodes on DVD?

I've definitely heard the, "I won't see this in theaters-- I'll wait for Netflix," but never with streaming, so I'm looking forward to your response.

Honestly, I just prefer watching anime on DVD in the comfort of my own living room. I have to be really invested in a show in order to watch it week-by-week on my computer... It's just not my preferred viewing experience. It feels like more of a "chore" sacrificing that comfort and ambiance for something I'm not already dying to see. So I don't mind waiting for home releases on those sorts of titles, it's worth it to me.

I'm glad these shows are available free and legally for those who enjoy watching anime online, but that's just never been my style. And, of course, I always purchase the DVD releases of the shows I do stream. If I loved them enough to put up with watching them on my computer, you know I love them enough to own them. I'd buy Un-Go in a hot second. Wink

Great column, you have now convinced me to give Fate/zero a try since all the previews put me off of it. Yay!

Got my vote "FOR" in favor of the plausibility of this column.

Admittedly I would've ignored Chihayafuru except 1 ANN reviewer happened to voice an opinion that suggested I just might wind up liking the series. I really enjoyed watching these youth accepting mentoring by adults. Many anime series suggest open defiance against authority and considering the age group the manga/anime is aimed at such a theme comes as no surprise. This aspect of this series plus your summations lead me to agree Chihayafuru is a win (so far).

I like Fate/zero for the richness and textures of background, character portrayal. I didn't watch it's predecessor nor do I feel the inclination to want to. I think I can formulate the past on my own watching these episodes unfold this storyline. Unless something really stupid occurs in future episodes I'll ride this pony to the finish line.

And Un-Go: agree with comments posted on CR about laxity of complicated who-dunnits so far in series that may doom my curiousity to finish. I do watch it because of the artwork and the writers have made Inga quite the intriguing side-kick. I love this anime because of her. Whether her antics will continue to mesmerize or become achingly predictable will be my litmus test to stay or bail this series because, so far, the other characters are predictable and forgettable.

Looking forward to your gems and/or rocks of wisdom re the future episodic releases this season, Bamboo. This column should be a fun read.

As much as I have really been enjoying Chihayafuru, I'm kinda worried about it. I loved every second of that extended flashback, but the beginning in "present" time bored me, and the fourth episode which was back to the present wasn't as exciting to me either. Plus it seemed rather obvious that spoiler[Arata had stopped playing karuta]. Maybe cause it's drama so I'm expecting the most dramatic thing to happen (which would be that). But I'll definetely keep watching.

I think the review of Un-Go was absolutely perfect. Too formulaic, the "mystery" is never very intriguing. But I'm gonna keep watching for now just to find out what the heck Inga is.

Only other thing I'm watching is Hunter X Hunter with my bro. I can tell I'd really love it if I literally hadn't read all the manga chapters right before the eps started airing (since I just read it it's less exciting to go through the beginning so soon again)., but I'm watching so I can keep track of where my brother is in the story. He thinks it's great.

Woah... Since when did ANN and GrantLand do a partnership?

I'm looking forward to Bill Simmons' joining the crew to do anime draft
for next season's Fantasy Anime Bingo/Drinking Game.

Still I am big time liking the premise, and honestly this might be the only reason for me to take interest in ANN anime columns. However greenlit this should get a steak and lower bowl tickets to a Clippers game!!

I have heard this before actually. a lot of people actually don't like to watch anime on their computer it seems, or won't hook it up to their tv.

Guilty Crown is great, and it will be worth the watch all the way to the end. Even with /a/'s endless complaints about its "generic cliches".

As for Majikoi, I'm actually enjoying it. It's a lot more fun than I originally expected, and I'm definitely not dropping it (although I can see why others might; hey, whatever floats their boat). However, I was a little bit offended when you called Miyako "awkward and creepy and illegal with her blatant advances, even though her moans sound like a thousand fanboys jerking off to a freeze frame". I don't know what I can say to refute the former, but as for the latter, I think Hyo-sei's voice is great, and it doesn't sound like fanboys doing that kind of stuff at all. Even though it's deathly obvious that Yamato (who isn't as empty a husk as initially perceived) won't end up with her, Miyako is still the best girl in the series.

And while I'm on the topic of Majikoi, it isn't really correct to jump to the conclusion that ALL FIVE GIRLS beat up Yamato for seeing them naked. That was most likely just all Momoyo and Chris; their eyes are different from Miyako's, Kazuko's, and Yukie's in the frame before the beating, which was offscreen so there's no real telling who did the beating (hence this paragraph).

I'm not trying to argue with you or anything, I'm just pointing out.

I'd also talk about Mirai Nikki, but I'll abstain, seeing how you aren't watching it.

If you have a wireless network in your house, this can be solved easily with a Roku device, at least for titles on Crunchyroll and Netflix. It streams online content to your TV via a paperback book sized box that connects to your wireless network. Many titles are also available on Hulu Plus, which can be watched on Roku or PS3 among other devices. But if you don't like watching on computer, you probably don't have a Hulu Plus subscription... Free Hulu is also doable with the addition of a little piece of software from playon.tv. I watch streaming content on my TV all the time, but frankly, my monitor is almost as big as my TV (only 1 inch difference) and I sit much closer to it, so the viewing experience is just as good on my computer... I also have been known to hook up my laptop to the TV to watch shows, which works fine too.

Here's what I do know—Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere is the ultimate fan panderpalooza. It exists for the simple reason of cramming every possible type of over-fetishized, DeviantArt-able creature into one cast, so that everyone can latch onto a character.

BUT THAT'S WHAT SO GREAT ABOUT HORIZON!

It's so over the top and crazy. It has a character for everybody from the trollish MC, to Baseball Cap Ninja to Mecha-Shark-bro.

It also has classic comedy moments. My personal favorite being Episode 3's (I think it was 3. Could've been 4) "Mecha Vs Maid."
It's also the middle of a storyline of books so it's not that surprising we don't know everything or anything at all.

That being said, toss me up for this column. Great idea. Great rating system and AWESOME execution.
