I feel like all of this new Yamato material is coming out in a big avalanche. Did those new films really do that well to justify all of it? I certainly know that Yamato is quite unpopular in the west aside from the people who are Leiji fans or watch Star Blazers. That 2009 doesn't even have 600 members on MAL, and only 300 even say they've watched it. I supposed in thrives in Japan on the nostalgia factor, but the themes of the original are sort of dated now, and without that need to help Japan regain a national identify like the 1974 series, it's really just another space opera. My opinion on Yamato is just to watch the first series and then immediately end it on Farewell Yamato; I actually find the second series insulting, and I find it insulting that the fans were able to raise such a stink over what should have been a noble end. Plainly put, I really dislike anything Yamato after Farewell.

But why does the show really even need a remake? Unless they're taking a drastic and wild approach like they did with Casshern (which seems to be more of a sequel to the OVA more than anything), do shows like these even do well when they're not Nagai related? Granted, Enma-kun and all of the Mazinger stuff are more just adapting the already wild originals to fit in today, which they've done every decade, but Yamato is a fundamentally different show that's focused on national pride, duty, and honor. I guess it could be creative in this newest installment, but I don't see to what degree, if the 2009 film is any indicator. A shame that Anno's particular talents will only extend to such a small matter.

2199: is that the year this show is destined to be released? Happy to see Evangelion redo might be done in my lifetime.
