The Fishman Island arc would be a good example too. Nami seems to consider Hatchi a friend now, even after what happened during the Arlong arc.

It's always nice to hear about an anime being used in regular school lessons.

This is awesome. I never really noticed how much Chopper had been through and how this actually all makes sense. I have to say, I wish I had that teacher as he's pretty cool.

That's really cool. In a Business Communications class I took last year, my teacher showed a lot of clips from The Office to demonstrate the concepts we were studying (usually to show us what not to do
 ).

I've never watched or read that far up on One Piece, but Chopper's experience could also be likened to that of Roma (a.k.a. Gypsies) and Jews in Europe, American Indians, or Asians in the U.S. and Canada (Head taxes, internment camps, and those barbaric, racist immigration laws).

Wish I had such a open minded and awesome teacher similar to this teacher when I was in high school. More often than not, I hear more negative news about anime and I find this very uplifting. Frankly, I imagine this type of teaching doesn't occur that much, as using anime to teach kids about human rights is pretty creative, but also a great way to connect to a younger generation.
I've been watching/reading One Piece for several years and I can completely see how the way Chopper was treated could be used for educational purposes. Honestly as with Cosplaybunny, I think a class similar to this should be required in every high school and should be just as important as a mathematics, English and Science class. Who knows, maybe a class similar to this might have a positive impact on those students and might even get said students to understand the true meaning of tolerance and acceptance. |

You know I wonder that too. This idea of using Chopper to relate to human rights is amazing. What's next, Code Geass to teach the evil of dictatorship and brutal regime that violate human right and the dark side of imperialism. I would like to see a teacher showing episode 1 and compare the crackdown and brutality to past imperialism (that may include Japan in 1930-1945) and current issues like Tibet and Palestine/Garza. They can use Library War (Toshokan Sensō) to teach the importance of Freedom of Speech. |

This sensei sounds as crazy as our old 70-yr-old World History teacher who jumped on parent's car who tried to break thru a teacher strike picket line - goodness, that was a fun learning class! Hope he inspires the J-youths the same civil rights movements in Japan - ganbatte!

Yes the matter of discrimination occurs often in One Piece but there is a subject that considering the world now might even be bigger and very few actually see.
Luffy wanted to be a pirate because he wanted to live free and eat all the meat he could despite the evil pirates that ruin the pirate reputation. On the other hand you have a government that seem to be the protectors and many people love them but they are full of corruption and especially at the very high level while some decent people exist more downwards. That world government is so similar to the governments we currently have in our world working under the globalization way and trying to stop freedom. |
