The only manga I've been reading shown here was animal land, so I'll just discuss my opinons on that (though, I do need to find time to see GTO, as I've heard good things about it)

I do agree about the fault that the story dosn't really have any depth into it, but for me it sort of works this way, since we're basicly set in a world ruled by animals in nature, where things are as simple as they come: live, hunt, eat, sleep. The kids aren't dominant leaders who have a pokemon-ish relation with the animals they live in, as such, the fued between the two animals is all the more justified. the killed or be killed way the lions attack also really isn't that big of a problem IMO, since thats pretty much been what this manga has been doing since day one, it makes me all the more curious how Toroza's going to accomplish his goal with such realistic barriers in front of him. The kurokagi back story isn't really a bad move IMO, but was timed just right, and the story in itself was pretty touching, even if only by a small amount.

I don't think that there aren't flaws in the story though, as while I don't mind the simple-ness it has, it can be offputting to those people who demand everything to be deeper than the frikkin ocean. I don't find too many faults in this volume but near the end of the next one is where I feel the weakness of the sereis shows itself, wherespoiler[we're left on a cliffhanger dealing with fire. the preview somewhat helps but not much] sometimes being too simple can be a problem in regards that we can figure out how a problem can be solved way beforehand, and so when the revelation of how its solved comes to light, the feeling is a bit dampend because we're left to think "you just NOW figured that out?"

all in all though I just wanted to share this, since I was saddend that it got a D of all things.

Regarding the reader reviews, is it possible for you to make a master list of the titles that have already been reviewed by fans? I have a few books that I'd like to write about, but can't remember what has already been posted. It would be super cool to have an ongoing master list for us to reference. Super cool, but maybe a lot of extra work for you too? If so, then never mind.

As always, great column. Thanks!

I liked the reviews this week. I have been really happy that I picked up Rosario+Vampire II. The first series was all panty shots and monters with no real plot, the series had no real direction. But Rosario Vampire 2 has been pushing into the good monsters vs bad monsters organzations for the future of the world direction since the get go; Not to mention the revelations of the main charachters past is very entertaining. Good review.
I have about given up on Tenjo Tenge, Good fights, not much else.

I'll admit to being biased in favour of Young Miss Holmes before I read it, but I enjoyed it for what it was. However, your criticisms have a point, I think formulaic feeling might in part be to how the Holmes stories are to an extent and trying to adapt them with the addition of Christie just means a sort of rehash of the nature of the short stories in condensed form. I think the mechanical nature of the story might fare better in later volumes. I personally would probably rate it a B+, but regardless I'm very happy with getting it, and will pick up the next one in November.

Yes. It's insanely crude, but really funny, and there are some touching moments as well (as in emotional... although Onizuka probably wouldn't mind the other kind).

enurtsol: There's a lot of 'em. Take your pick.

Anyway, I, too, was reluctant on Young Miss Holmes, but it literally might be our only chance to get companies to consider bringing back Area 88, so...

Borgman: Because they're putting 'em out two to a book.

Probably because there's only 7 volumes of it out in Japan right now, and Seven Seas is doing an omnibus versions of 2 volumes each out here. So 3-4 will be out in November, I think they're just spacing it out, which honestly I'm not super upset about.
