Bookscan represents around 65-75% of the US graphic novel sales specialist comic book stores DO NOT matter for manga Diamond is THE supplier for comic stores and in 2011 (yes the whole year) the best selling manga through diamond was Naruto Vol. 50 with 5,600 copies sold (to stores not customers) and at number 84 in diamonds yearly GN list http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/2011.html |

I think this list really shows about how much the manga industry has collapsed over the years. I mean how can you justify printing the vast majority of manga with sales like this.

These sales must also not count Canada or the UK which the reason for the low count

Even if it is a small number and doesn't account for ALL the purchases, the numebrs make sense. Mangas are niche, and what's more rare is for people to PURCHASE them. If that's only X% of all purchases, I'd still call it a "not bad", considering.

Now that we know the numbers behind the rankings, we can see how far behind the other manga are relative to the few topnotchers. Still, as mentioned in a previous thread:

So some books may be selling double or triple these numbers.” I’m curious, what are you comparing these numbers to that makes you describe them as low? This represents the number of copies sold last week through most outlets in the U.S., minus comics shops (a significant omission) and WalMart (not usually a significant omission, though it is in the case of Sailor Moon, which I’m involved with, and which is stocked at WalMart). There are books on the list selling 4-5000 copies per month, numbers that any publisher would be delighted about. Perhaps you’re comparing it to the Diamond graphic novel numbers? If so, it’s an apples-to-oranges comparison. The Diamond number represents the number of copies sold to shops, not to customers, while the Bookscan numbers represent copies sold to customers. Calista Brill 06/05/2012 at 4:19 pm I think you’re overestimating the accuracy of these numbers for graphic novels. My rule of thumb for graphic novels is to multiply bookscan numbers by about 4 – and that’ll give you a general sense of the actual sales of the book. It varies by publisher, obviously: some publishers do more of their business in the trade (bookstores) and others do more in the direct market / specialty world (comic book stores and etc) and still others focus on the library market. But yeah, if bookscan tells me a book has sold 2,500? I assume it’s more like 10,000. The Beat 06/05/2012 at 6:36 pm Yikes! So many voices! I got the 80% figure from Jonathan Segura who wrote the preamble to the numbers. Dallas: I base that on things like Callista’s comment! Even today at BEA I heard people talking about how BookScan is consistently low. So, like I said: take with a grain of salt, but the TRENDS are accurate.
Now that we know the numbers, what's the calculation % of buyers per scanlation downloads? Then we can use that as a rough baseline how much scanlations increase the sales of future acquisitions. |

Apparently [name withheld] one of the less popular manga streaming sites reported Naruto got like 5 million unique IP hits for each new chapter back before the great Viz VS Mangastream War of 2012. I can only imagine how big the more popular manga streaming sites get. You can see why Viz might wanted to have it taken down. That's like.. 500,000% of who actually buys the US manga. |

How many just from US? the entire world may go to a scan site afterall US does not = world. regardless what some in the US feel. A new Naruto vol in it's first year sells 50,000+ copies so if a Naruto chapter gets 500,000 hits that's a 10X increase yet the US makes up only 4.3% of the world population or 16.5% of English speakers in the world. |
