Wait, the print-on-demand Right Stuf experiment.Hetalia manga vol 3 came out. How did it work out? Did it have a decent print run? Will Right Stuf do this type of thing with other titles? And what is Hetalia vol 3 like?

I couldn't tell you what their print run was, but the book is still listed as in-stock at TRSI (with the note about included colour pages; I imagine they'll remove that once those copies are sold out). They just shipped my order out a couple days ago; from the tracking page I should get it tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think of it then... unless someone else gets/posts about their copy first! |

Thanks! I'm not a big fan of Hetalia-I thought the first two books were cute, elicited a few chuckles, and had a lot of fun historical and cultural factoids. The idea that this is a limited run with color pages interests me as a manga fan in general. I wouldn't have even considered buying it if Tokyopop was still around and this release was part of their regular run.
I hope this is successful for Right Stuf, and that they consider printing or re-printing more OOP titles in the future. |

Alright! Since I promised, and my book arrived today...
Basically, the contents themselves look just like the Tokyopop books, in regards to font, logos, etc (even a "Like us on Facebook" message on the inside-cover). On the b/w title page, it displays RightStuf's and Gentosha's logos along with Tokyopop's; the next page looks like the usual Tokyopop credits page, except for a line under the TPop logo noting its association with RightStuf and Gentosha, and listing some contact info for RightStuf as well as Tokyopop. Tokyopop probably had all the book layout work done before it shut down, so RightStuf could just print it as it was, with the credit-additions. At the end of the book, there's a note from editor Cindy Suzuki (as in previous volumes), followed by 8 pages of historical background info. All three books have the same dimensions. The coverstock of volume 3 is glossy, while Tokyopop's v1-2 were matte. The inside colour pages of volume 3 are matte, while Tokyopop's v1-2 were glossy. (heh) I like the matte colour pages; not quite as fond of the glossy cover... The paper used for cover and interior is a bright-white, as opposed to the cream shade Tokyopop's books (and most manga) use. I've heard it said manga should be printed on cream, not white, paper and I tend to agree... but in Hetalia's case—maybe because it started out a digital comic, and uses grey tones plentifully and has a lot of design-y stuff with itty-bitty details—it looks a little more clean and crisp on the white. Er, if you wanted to know what I thought of the manga itself, I haven't read it yet. I'm also a casual Hetalia reader rather than devoted fan. The pages of historical background info at the end do look pretty interesting and informative though. |
