I think these are so cool ... and the fact that they actually seem to WORK makes $100 seem not THAT expensive. The only reason I haven't snatched these up already is that the ears are so not cute, lol.

I also think this technology is really interesting - does this show a future for super-useful prosthetics??? Like, artificial hands that work through brain waves if they can figure out how the brain waves work exactly? That would be pretty awesome!

The awkward thing is if there's a reaction to 'horny'.

So in theory, it seems like this tech could be used to make a good portable lie detector. I guess you have to start somewhere, and Otakus love cat ears Confused

I have a friend who bought them at AnimeNEXT. If you have the right hair, you can plausibly cover up all the wiring and stuff and just have two cat ears on your head.

Don't know if the motors break immersion or just add to the novelty.

They sound ridiculous but entertainingly ridiculous, and I'd love to see them in action.

I suspect if they make enough money on these there'll be later versions which may be less obvious in use and with quieter motors.

My friend and I bought these off of RightStuf (and if you're a GotAnime member, you'll save $10 off the price so they're only $90) and wore them all day, every day at Anime Expo. We got a lot of people asking about them, so many that I still think Neurowear should have paid us for our advertising Smile

Just a heads up though, if you're going to wear them around at a convention, and I can't imagine people would wear them much elsewhere, bring a lot of batteries. The ears are almost constantly doing something whether it be just little twitches or the big movements, so those 4 AAA's will be drained in a day, max. They held up better when I turned them off whenever I was in a panel. Also, maybe it was just the way my head was, but after wearing them for hours and hours, they started to dig in to my scalp. I'd recommend wrapping the metal headband with some foam rubber padding or something. I literally had grooves in my scalp for a whole day after the convention.

I'll let you know what alcohol does for them the next time I'm drinking with friends.

That was what my friend and I were most looking forward to doing when we got them. It seemed the more you drank, the more likely they were to go into droopy mode. And when you were having conversations they perked up more, presumably since you had to concentrate a little harder on what was being said. We didn't drink until we got annihilated though, so perhaps at that point they'd just go into the "Can't find brain signal" mode.

Are there alternative covers? Specifically, would it be possible to get ears resembling a Norwegian Elkhound's?[/url]

People have started making alternate covers, but there aren't any official ones per say. You could probably find someone who would be willing to make that on commission if there isn't anything to your liking already.

I got to try these at ColossalCon (the sales booth guy was letting people put them on and test them before they dropped the cash on a pair) and...they're actually a pretty impressive piece of technology. I passed on getting my own, though - I've never gotten into the whole cat-ear thing, personally.

Although I guess if I could get a pair that were shaped like Briareos' bunny ear antennae from Appleseed...

I saw these all over AX this year and I felt embarrassed just watching other people wear them. Interesting idea anyway.

It's distracting sitting behind someone wearing these at a panel because all you hear is "whirrrrrr whirrrrrrrrr" as the ears move up and down.

Won't that get in the way of the ears reading the brain? I presume that the metal band is for signal reception, and that it more-or-less has to be against the scalp. Maybe not. I think that I've seen them from a distance

The things that otaku have to endure... ^^;

I'll pass on the ears. Maybe if the concept can be applied in some other way (I have absolutely no idea what), I'll get interested.

As a public service announcement, if you go to something like a con panel with these, or really anything where you're expected to be a quiet audience, turn them off. The motors are just too loud for that kind of thing.

No, you just need that microphone looking piece to be in contact with your forehead. The metal bars I meant was the headband part that goes across the top of your head, the part the ears are attached to. That's the part that starts to dig in after awhile. The ear clip can start to be annoying after awhile too, so I'd recommend changing its position now and again.
