Its an OVA of one of the best selling series ever. It shouldn't really be a surprise. Anyway, it was pretty stacked last week. Nise continues its amazing sales and its average sales are good for 5th best TV anime released since 2000. |

Like everything else Code Geass, it's crazy with a great serve of Jun Fukuyama Ham. Meanwhile, also good to see Space Battleship Yamato in second spot. Having bought it and sat through it, I can attest it's worth every yen, even at Japanese prices. Here's hoping it eventually gets licensed outside Japan so both existing Star Blazers fans can enjoy it and a new generation of fans can see the storytelling that set the standard for all sci-fi anime that followed the original. |

Nunnally I'd understand if it was...you know...animated. You can feed me as many lines you want defending the still images, but it means "cheap" to me, regardless of the scripting, writing, storyboard, artistry, and acting. Even taking those into consideration, it still wasn't anything special– did people buy this knowing what they were getting?
The new Yamato is decent for a remake, it's not hard to visually improve upon a low budget 1974 series, but I really hope it breaks into its own grooves and doesn't adhere so closely. As an OVA, there's no way this is targeted to children, so I can only surmise it's selling to otaku and nostalgic salarymen who want the Yamato experience, but not the old art. |

It was actually a very disappointing showing compared to what Stalker projected (20k projected and only 13k sold), so I'd assume a lot of people actually cancelled their preordered after they heard about it being a picture drama. |

Yamato's not an OVA, it's a 26-episode series. It's just being released in seven blocks of episodes as separate cinematic releases. They've simply made the decision that it won't be aired on television before it has completed its cinema run. As for Yamato's storyline, why fix something that isn't broken? There's nothing wrong with the original story, save a few gaping plot holes which this version has already started to fill in, the cast has been expanded and the original characters and in some cases, their origins have changed from the original. The intention of the producers here is to retell the original story of Yamato and pass it onto the next generation of anime fans as well as rekindling the nostalgia of the original series' fans. Remember, Yamato is the seminal sci-fi anime. Series like Macross, Gundam, and Evangelion (whose creator Hideki Anno storyboarded 2199's opening sequence pretty much as a labour of love because Yamato is what inspired him to become involved in anime production) owe their success in no small part to the trail set by Yamato in the 1970s. The existing story is great, and you have to be careful with something as revered in Japan as Yamato to not change things too much. So far, I've been very impressed with the changes they have made, things have made more sense, and important parts of the original plot have not so far been watered down or omitted. As someone who first saw Star Blazers every weekafternoon thirty years ago as a wide-eyed 8-year-old, I'm more than impressed with what they've done so far. I'm hoping it's a roaring success to the point that they do the second season (The Comet Empire) as it was every bit the first season's equal in storytelling and action. I can't imagine too many Star Blazers fans being disappointed in what's been delivered so far, and if they are, well maybe their standards are just a little high. |

I own three of the top-10 releases on that chart: Yamato 2199, Hyouka 2 LE, K-On! movie LE. Yay!
Why does the info for Nunnally show its highest rank as #4, when it's #5 in its first week? When did it get to #4? ^^;
I'm not the next-generation of anime fan, but 2199 is pretty much my first time viewing anything Yamato. It's also one of my _very_ few blind-buys these days (heh, I'll blind-buy an import before I blind-buy a domestic release ^^;; ). I watched the first couple of episodes of Starblazers after DVR'ing them, when Cartoon Network re-ran them relatively recently, but I stopped when CN didn't get beyond the first few episodes. Starblazers originally aired when I was watching cartoons, but for some reason I was never watching that channel. I never looked into Yamato TV or the movies. Aside from a few minor issues, I'm loving 2199 so far... I wish that November would hurry up and get here so that I can get the next disc. |

If you can get a copy of Star Blazers on DVD, I'd recommend it, the animation is aged, but the storytelling for the first two seasons is really good. If you can play R4 discs, you can get all three TV seasons from Madman in Australia for the price of one US release season (A$90). The third season isn't that fantastic, but it'd be worth seeing the original story at some point to make comparisons. Also, the second season is must-see. |

Its worth noting that combining dvd sales kurokos basketball is the best selling anime of the spring season followed by AW. I'm glad AW sold well since i been loving it same with kuroko.

My beef with the overall Yamato is what they did after Farewell Yamato. That seriously pisses me off and made enjoying the second season quite a challenge. I never felt the need to watch the third season or the later movies because of that, I take Farewell Yamato as canon. Luckily this remake is chronologically ahead, so it's fine.
