For almost $1,600, I can buy Fate/Zero Vol. 1+2, Garden of Sinners, Madoka Magica Vol. 1,2, & 3 Blu Ray, R.O.D. Complete Collection, Rurouni Kenshin: The Movie, Bakemonogatari, Baccano, and Durarara Complete Collection on Blu Ray on RightStuf.com.

What do I get if add $6800 more?

A stupid piece of film. =__=

This is just plain robbery.

To be perfectly honest, if I'd gotten the cell of that...I wouldn't have sold it.

It's not robbery. People are paying that much for it of their own accord, and that's entirely their prerogative. I can't imagine that the people buying these aren't seasoned collectors who know what they're doing. It looks like the seller started it at 1,000 yen, which is extremely cheap for something like this.

Its a "stupid piece of film" of one of the most beloved couples of the last half decade, who's lives are filled with misery and suffering, having a moment together of pure happiness and love.

I can definitely see why it would sell for so much.

It's definitely a great looking shot from the film, but that price is pretty outrageous. Even the original production sketches that were on Mandarake a year ago didn't go for more than a quarter of that amount. What's even more impressive is the fact that there appear to have been 8 seperate bidders bidding above the 600K yen mark. Normally when you see something going for far above a normal price, it's the result of two uberfans duelling it out and driving the price up into the stratosphere, while here there would appear to have been quite a few people prepared to bid at that level. I love me some yuri-themed production art, and might have put in a bid if this had been going for about 300 bucks, but with a fanbase this rabid it would appear i'm better off sticking to Marimite and Strawberry Panic production sketches.

We can guess!

35mm projection film is basically the same as old-fashioned film-camera film; they probably use slightly-cheaper chemistries and a more-durable base, though. A 36-exposure film would run for... about 3.5 seconds? At a guess though they've chopped it into quarter-second or so segments, or shorter.

Are they really "snuggling" or simply quasi-Eskimo kissing? It's hard to tell just from the images given.

So... my film strip shows Sayaka staring dumbfounded at the screen after spoiler[Hitomi tells her she likes Kyousuke.] Bids starting at $1000. Who wants it? =D

'Tis unfortunate for me that my friend I went with got spoiler[a close-up of the magical girl in the last episode with the bear ears.] I was one spot in line away from getting it. ONE SPOT AWAY. D:

Production cels (and it's spelled 'cel') haven't been made since 2001. One of the last productions was Tree of Palme in 2000. If you can find production artwork from anime productions past 2001, most of what you'll find are copy settei and copy storyboards. Depending on the production, you may be able to find douga, backgrounds & layouts. But that's a big "if" as many studios have chosen to destroy them.

Some productions have rilezu, but these are all post production items. Sometimes they come with their original sketch, but most of the time, they don't. So far, there has been no word if Madoka will release rilezu.

Not a lot of production sketches out there for Madoka. Most of what I've seen are all nth copy storyboards & settei.

On the contrary, they recently released a huge set of production sketches, storyboards, etc. in the form of several giant hardcover books. One for episodes 1-3. One for episodes 4-6. One for episodes 7-9. One for episode 10 ALONE (including some of the stuff they cut out). And then one for episodes 11-12. I've seen them (too expensive to buy and ship alone) and looked through the episode 10 one. Between previous production books and these new ones, they barely have anything left to show us about the original anime...

As for film strips, this is my second one. My first one came from pre-ordering the Limited Edition PSP game. Both are guaranteed actual film strips--not copies. =P

I'm talking about actual production artwork, not the reprints that you would find in books Smile
These are the actual sheets of paper that were drawn by production artists, and then scanned into the computer for coloring and animation purposes. These are usually sold on Japanese auction sites, and depending on the scene and anime, can sell for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. A lot of people, including myself, collect these pieces of artwork, and many of us display them online at places like Rubberslug.

A 30 minute episode usually has around 250-310 cuts (sequences), and the sketches for those could easily be enough for a book. A cut is usually defined by the number of backgrounds used, and each cut consists of anywhere from one to a couple hundred sketches (bank sequences). Some of my Kobato backgrounds are numbered into the 330s, so if you average every sequence as having 10 individual drawings, that's 3300 sketches for that episode alone.
