Hate to be a stickler but...typo:

I'm glad Sakuran wasn't a sugar-coated view of prostitution during the Edo period. Moyoco Anno's character design feels distorted, sort of like a caricature drawing, but not in a comical way. While the settings and backgrounds are done quite well, I enjoyed how "odd" and crude the characters looked.

Actually, had all the women looked beautiful or cute and the men looked handsome, I probably would have dismissed this series as simple "whore with a heart of gold" story without any real merit.

Even though the series is mainly about Kiyoha, I'm glad that we saw glimpses of other courtesans lives. It really gives a more varied look at the life of a sex worker and how dehumanizing it really is.

In retrospect, this sums up how I felt when I reached the end of the manga. Kiyoha may not have been an easy character to follow, but nonetheless I felt flashes of sympathy as I read her story.

I can't say I'm a fan of Moyoco Anno (Happy Mania, the first series I read from her, didn't jive well with me at all), but I will look into any future series Vertical may release from her. (I've been interested in Hataraki Man for a while now...)

This one has been on my to-read list for awhile now. I actually have seen the movie that was made of it a few years ago, though I admit I do not remember much.

I really wish Hataraki Man would get an English release, it sounds like a very good series. And I did enjoy Sugar Sugar Rune as well so I definitely will be checking this one out eventually.

"Brothel Owner Wins Election In Nevada, First Ever To Hold Office"

  • Lance Gilman is the owner of the Mustang Ranch in Nevada, and this fall ran for Storey County commissioner. As The Associated Press noted, Gilman will become the first brothel owner to win election since prostitution was legalized in the state in 1971.

“He’s in rare company,” said Nevada historian Guy Rocha. “Of course, it’s going to be rare because the business of selling sex for money is illegal in every jurisdiction in the United States except in rural Nevada.”

The brothel owner wins the election running as a “dye-in-the-wool Republican who loves American values.” He won with 62 percent of the vote in the county with close to 6,000 people.

Gilman, a 68-year-old father of four has nine grandchildren, is eager to share the economic impact of his business. He claims that the brothel he operates along Interstate 80 about 10 miles east of Reno contributed about $5 million to the county’s budget in the past decade. He employes 44 full-time employees and between 30 and 80 prostitutes.

Pardon my ignorance but I suppose the reason why you're using this article to counter my "dehumanize" comment is to show that prostitution isn't completely bad since is contributes to the economy of whatever county or providence the business is located in?

Because while the history of prostitution goes back to who knows how long (heck, there were even transportable whores during World Wars), I still stand by my own personal belief that using the human body (whether by choice or not)as a sexual object is immoral. For me, it's a matter of personal ethnics not profits.
