I've found some good stuff on Jmanga. My suggestions would be:
Apartments of Calle Feliz - An EST EM title that is made of various short stories focused around said apartments. Cousin - A story about a fat girl who wants to lose weight because she wants someone to love her but is that really all it takes to do so? Edo Nekoe Jubei Otogizoshi - I tell people this is like Mushishi but with cats but it's not boring like Mushishi. This is a super cute manga that focuses on Jubei the cat painter and his friend the Nita the nekomata and various magical things that happen around them. I don't even like cats all that much but this title is great. ILEGENES-Track of a Black Gleam- - Actually reminds me of the Ikki title Afterschool Charisma except it comes off way less silly in the beginning. But it has the clone, genes, private school thing going on. Star Protector Dog - This was also published as (the much less Engrlishy) Stargazing Dog. It is a really touching story about an old man and his dog. It's also super depressing. Thankful the second volume is just as touching but less depressing. |

I was REALLY impressed with the anime version of Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru. It was a blind impulse buy that pretty much blew me away. I'll have to check out the manga as well.
So many of the stories you read sounded real interesting. It's too bad they failed in the execution. |

I found a real good manga on JManga. It's called "Kingyo's Used Books." It's about a place that has used manga. You can call it an anthology series because it has no real fixed characters. Well,it has a few,but not many. Just the store employees,that's all. I'd also seen "Town of Evening Calm,Country of Cherry Blossoms" and "Pupa." But,I seemed to like "Kingyo's Used Books" best of all. It's a really sweet manga with titles that are either unknown or unpublished here in the States. I hope you look for "Kingyo's." This one's a worthwhile find.

Kingyo Used Books is a Viz title. I don't think it's on JManga, but it was being serialized on their SigIKKI site so maybe you read it online there? I like it too (though it usually just makes me want to read other manga that aren't available in English).
Anyway. I'm a huge fan of SoreMachi. JManga also has a collection of the author's early oneshots, titled Present for me. As a reader familiar with his later work, I enjoyed seeing how his style and themes have evolved. And it's got some fantastic gags :) |

BTW, in case it was unclear in the article, a little bird reminded me that SJ Alpha isn't limited to tablets; it works on any computer with an internet connection. I'll still have to write about it later, though (perhaps as part of a general article on Viz's Shonen Jump).

I tried the preview for that one the other day and really liked it alot, think after my exams are over I'll go buy some points and get the first volume (along with a few other things that caught my eye like Aoi Hana, Tokyo Lastochika and Moehime). Keep forgetting that I got the first volume of Girlfriends on JManga, need to find time to read that as well.... |

Much like Jason I used Jmanga when it opened but didn't use it much since then. Ninja Papa and Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru were some of the first things I bought though.
Both are good and I think I'm going to get more volumes later. Also, I have a Nexus 7 tablet and got the Jmanga app on it. One of the things I haven't figured out is how to download a full volume. It looks like you have to download chapter by chapter. =/ There's also a black border around the manga pages/images. Which isn't bad, but Viz's app and Comixology takes up the full screen (except for the system buttons). |

I had no idea you lived in Seattle. I love that store, it does get really crowded on fridays or saturdays. And the music section upstairs is REALLY pricey. Have you checked out Vagabond? There is a new issue coming out Dec 18th. It is one of my favorites and I'm glad it's going to get an end.

I'm amazed that Hoshi no Samidare: The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer hasn't been suggested yet, so I'm going to rectify that oversight.
Admittedly, they've only got the first two volumes so far, but it's still damn good. Although I do sort of wish it had a chance of getting a dead tree edition in the States. Or an anime, but that's even less likely. |

Hmmm I actually quite enjoyed Sekine's Love in its offbeat way.
Correct me I am wrong but you took the situation completely different as to how I did. Sekine doesn't have a fetish for emaciated women at all. I thought the point of the story was in fact the complete opposite, being around his friend's wife made him physically ill and he detested being in her company because she was emancipated, only remaining in it because it was some of the little social contact he had with the world. He does seem to have some feelings for her, but not because she is thin. Speaking of other things on JManga, if your into offbeat weirdness there is always Brocken Blood, that manga is just bizarre. I think you mean 'emaciated', not 'emancipated.' I thought it was a combination of attraction AND disgust, the way he was fascinated by her illness and sickness, and all his fantasies about her slender wrists snapping and breaking.... It's clear he's in love with her, although it's mixed with other feelings. |

Soremachi is really worth checking out. It's genuinely creative and hilarious and doesn't get bogged down with boy girl romance or cliched manga fillers. Interesting characters throughout. Even the maid cafe tenchou.

And yeah, it's clear he has unresolved feelings for her, but it was my feeling that they were unresolved because he wasn't comfortable because of her issues, rather than because he had some fetish (i.e. he doesn't pursue emaciated women, which would be a fetish, but only her). I guess I just take issue to Jason calling it a fetish, as I have had somewhat comparable emotions before (being uncomfortable around some people, and yes imagining things), and I certainly don't consider myself to have a fetish. |
