How about Dick Schweiger's Moresukine as yet another approach? He's an artist who lived in Japan for a year and created a visual blog. Every week he'd go do something one of his readers asked him to try (fugu, a bath, checking out Yankii culture, okonomiyaki, etc.), and then he'd fill up two pages of a Moleskine journal (thus the name of the book) with drawings and text about his experience.

It was a wonderful blog to follow, though I'm afraid I've never even opened the copy of his book I bought.

Jason, just about every other one of your columns sends me off to read something new --- this one is sending me off to read something old, I've had Japan as viewed by 17 creators for years, but it's never made it to the top of my queue. Thanks!

....And, I don't know about Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, but Kozue Amano's Aria has me ready to travel to Venice.

I read this and Korea As Viewed by 12 Creators at my school's Comic Collection. I'm usually 50/50 with anthology manga. If there's an artstlye or story that interests me (like Jiro Taniguchi's short about the two cousins) I end up wishing there was more. The shorts from French author's like Aurita were also a mixed bag; great to see a different perspective on Japan through the eyes of "foreigners".

Now, I want read more travelogue manga but about other countries.

This sounds so fascinating! I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. (As an Anno fan, I am indebted to myself to at least read it!) I wonder if this could function as a good gateway/intro to French comics for manga fans, maybe introduce them to some names and styles that they might want to check out more of later.

I should start clicking more. I didn't realize Jason Thompson's House of 1000 Manga links to TVTropes.

Boilet x Aurita dialogues were hilarious. The narration from the second image seemed a little fragmented? But I'm finding myself more and more drawn in every time I look back at it, because what wonderful stray thoughts for internal dialogue! And the panel with the trees is amazing. And the detailing in the margins of the first image...

I'm going to have to bookmark this and check back in tomorrow to see if it will be an impulse buy.
