Shirou CAN be annoying. "I wanna do the right thing. I wanna do all the fighting instead of the other better-prepared, much-stronger, more-experienced fighters. Too bad I always end up getting my butt kicked."

A B- seems a bit low. Especially considering that it's Theron, who a bit more generous as a reviewer for these types of shows. But the first half of the series is definitely the weaker one.

Even after watching Fate/ZERO, Shirou's attitude and actions are still incredibly grating. I don't care if his heart is in the right place, he's a sexist moron, trying to put warped ideals above the stark reality of his (and Saber's) situation.

Yes his actions are annoying, but don't forget to take into account the huge hero complex that he developed because of his past experience.

I always thought the naivete of Shirou's ideals were part of the point. It has been a while since I've seen the show, but I thought he matures a little by the end.

I think one of the problems here regarding his idealism is that this is the Fate route. He's idealistic in the Fate route. In Unlimited Blade Works spoiler[he's less idealistic, but still a bit.] and Heaven's Feel spoiler[he is not idealistic.]

If those spoiler tags are too implicit, someone can say something and I will just dump the whole thing in to a spoiler tag.

borders on typical teen action/harem fare

This is where frankly I just don't get Theron. And I don't say that to be critical. He just genuinely perplexes me. It's not because he's wrong either. He's right about FSN. There is certainly a harem type set up underlying even if very little comes of it (although I admit there are undeniably a couple harem trope moments). I would definitely have to call it a fairly superficial and benign instance overall though. A pretty minor case that only the most harem opposed would really have a big problem with. Which again is fine, but also thoroughly perplexing from a guy who usually gives these tropes a pass in much more extreme cases than this.

It is part of the point, and in terms of the original material, makes sense. He is suppose to mature over the story paths, but this doesn't transfer as well to the anime as it is a stand alone path. In fact for the VN, [ubw spoiler] spoiler[his immaturity in the first arc is essential to establish why Archer had such a hard fall and end up the way he is, but just from the anime's stand alone path you don't get to really see these results.]

@ikillchicken:

That's a interesting point. Why would Harem fare be bad in Fate/Stay Night but alright in dozens of other titles he's reviewed over the years?

I think that its because Fate/stay night has such great potential as an epic fantasy adventure, a potential which it usually capitalizes on, that these harem tropes seem particularly odd and noticeable, despite not being very pronounced. They don't seem like they belong, even though we know the reason their there.

most people just dont want to admit that typemoon is an eroge company and believe fate series is not a harem show

personally, I do not think the fate series is in the same boat as tsukihime, it is much more mainstream, hence almost being a harem show

Who exactly is "most people"? Are you insinuating that any of the people in this thread think this? Because that would be utterly baseless and therefore quite a silly thing to say.

Yes, because Tsukihime is tooooootally not an eroge and tooooootally not haremish at all.

I saw the anime a while ago and haven't finished the visual novel, but I think Theron is overstating the prevalence of the eroge elements in the visual novel itself. There are sex scenes (apparently hilarious; I'm looking forward to finding out), but the whole game is not filled with sleazy fanservice that's been removed for the anime adaptation.

As a related point, and this is probably just being over-technical, since Fate/stay night is the original self-contained work, reading its prequel to understand it should not be (and I never found it) necessary: Shirou's judging his philosophy against Kiritsugu situation is explained in flashbacks and narration. It's certainly a point of interest and contrast, though. Oh, and Shirou is dumb as rocks with his obliviousness and failure to grasp simple concepts - even if you forgive him his slavish devotion to his naïve philosophy.

Anyway, I enjoyed the review, it mostly echoes my view on the series.

Well, sounds like it might just be more worth it for me to just wait for Sentai to release the complete series on DVD next month since it sounds like one of the worse BD conversions... Anyways, haven't seen this yet, but I liked Fate/Zero enough to see what happens next.

How far you're into the visual novel? It's not until UBW that you have a full grasp of his reasoning and he's definitely not the "people die if they are killed" and "girls shouldn't fight, period" guy people judge him as after watching the anime.
