As of many happening so far, Japan gets strict with copyright things. They don't do better than just hunting people that were uploading/downloading illegally. That's why I torrent anime never licensed in USA.

But you can still watch free episodes on Crunchyroll with ads, so as Hulu.

Part of me wants to download Share to support the rebellious Japanese uploading these anime. Suck it, Japanese government, I'm in the land of the free.

Well, At least AnimeSuki did a understanding about anime that are licensed in the US and so, they delisted it as a licensed anime to avoid the issues of illegal downloading.

People really don't care about the other countries not in the "selected territories" list, do they?

But man, it sure appears to be that they're been cracking down hard recently. While I can surely comprehend the rights and motivations of the offended companies, I have to be dreadfully honest and say that it's kind of sad that the laws have been becoming so draconian.

I can't help but feel that they are going in the wrong path here. Instead of 'burn the offenders at the stake' how about try to make their official releases more attractive and appealing to fans instead to drive sales? Ah, but of course, that would be more difficult and would involve actual effort.

Also, out of pure unadulterated curiosity, have they actually gotten any hard evidence on the effects of piracy on sales of DVD/BDs?

The laws have been the same, it's the enforcement that's gotten much more draconian.

Wrong path? possible.. I think they are trying to go go after the quasi or de facto so called "commercial" uploaders and downloaders.

I don't think there is any real empirical evidence that can quantitatively prove lost sales due to UL and / DL piracy, but the laws, as written do not require that.

Doubtful. Unless what we hear about is only a drop in the ocean... And that's mainly been users of 'older' networks, winny and share, along with not exactly the best practices of the people involved. Compared to all copyright trolls going on fishing expeditions for John Does here in the west, well...
