Interesting how the biggest openings of the box office year are ALL anime movies so far :
Rank - Gross - Movie title - Admissions 1-¥1.372 billion - One Piece Z - 1,140,081 2-¥683.9 million - Dragon Ball Z - 561,098 3-¥671.6 million - Conan 17 - 565,914 4-¥667.3 million - Doraemon 34 - 597,899 5-¥456.8 million - Hunter x Hunter - 357,976 And there's a lot more to come with Pokemon 16, the Miyazaki movie, the Takahata movie...This is probably going to be a record year for the japanese anime industry in terms of box office success (biggest year so far is probably 2001 with more than 45 billion yen essentially thanks to Spirited Away). |

And don't ever forget Gintama movie 2. Well I don't really know if it's famous or not
By the way is DC movie 17 already out? That's fast, I thought it'd be a little longer before it's aired in the theater |

Do normal people in Japan just not go to the movie theaters or something? Its weird to see nothing but anime movies making the most money at the box office.

What do you mean 'normal' people ? These are all movie adaptations of very mainstream franchise and it isn't frowned upon by normal people to go see them. Those are only the opening week-ends though. Anime movie tend to be more frontloaded than other movies. Ted, Les Misérables and Skyfall are all among the best grossing movies of the year so far despite smaller openings. ^^ |

They do, though Japan is much more a TV society than a movie one. What Kutsu cited are just the opening weekend highs. Seems other movies have longer staying power.
