Pointing out the fact that the ending theme has spoilers in it is a spoiler in and of itself. If I didn't know perhaps I wouldn't have noticed. Anyway, I've been meaning to try this out for some time anyway.

I love the opening and ending themes to Rose of Versailles. It is one of the few shows that I actually sit through both songs every episode.

Huh, really? I remember noticing when I saw the fansub years ago, and so not being surprised when I read the manga. Well, I guess we all notice different things. Sorry!
I love the opening (even if my cats do not appreciate me singing along), but the ending doesn't really do it for me. I watch it for the pictures, though. I love Ikeda's art.  When I graded the music I was talking more about the background stuff than the theme songs.

Good review. I especially liked the way you went into Marie's portrayal. It's kind of sad that in real life she has been vilified so much by so many people. In reality she was actually more like the ignorant but essentially kind-hearted woman she was portrayed as in the show.
And as a nice tidbit, she never even spoke that famous line of "let them eat cake". Seriously, she wasn't even married at the time; she was only eleven at the time the rumour started and not yet the Dauphine of France, let alone Queen of it. As if that wasn't enough, the line was not even attributed to her until many, many years later when the anti-Austrian and anti-Monarchist sentiments rose to fever pitch. On another note, somehow the 'Shoujo-ness' of the series didn't bother me much as I thought it would. I guess forewarned is forearmed. And besides, I was too busy getting wrapped up in the characters to care. I do slightly disagree with you on the grade. I would rate this half of the show as a B+, and the upcoming second half as an A-. Although the first half did a commendable job in laying the groundwork, I found that it's only in the second half when the story really hits its straps and starts becoming so engrossing. |

Yay, one of my favorite series ever. I've already set up a RoV shelf at home. I recently went to Japan and bought a lot of RoV stuff when I went to the International Manga Museum in Kyoto: pins, covers, post cards, stickers, the 1st two French tomes of the manga (I'll be buying the 3rd one online later).
I've thought about doing a one-two punch to the gut by watching all of Rose of Versailles after the 2nd half comes out and then following up by watching Les Misérables. Oh hey, let's watch depressing things happen to my favorite characters during the French Revolution! Oh hey, let's watch depressing things happen to my favorite characters after the French Revolution! 
The OP is one of my favorites. I also really love Lareine's rock cover version of it. The ED is not as memorable as the OP, but it's still pretty. (Oh, well, there's one part that's memorable: Ah, Oscar. OSCAAAAAAAAAAAR!) I wonder if Toei ever plans on releasing that movie version that was first announced in 2007.  Dodgamnit, Toei.

Really? I thought the OP was a bit boring, but I love the ED. Anyway, this is the best anime I've purchased in a long time, and I can't wait to get the rest. |

Yes, when I am watching it on Viki I always listen through the OP to get into the mood for melodrama, but normally click out at the ED. |

It's a shame this wasn't dubbed into English,but I can see somewhat why it wasn't. It's probably too old to be dubbed into English like more recent anime would have been. Still,it's a shame it wasn't. I'd have loved to have heard this in English.

I'm taking it I'm the only one that doesn't care for the OP...
The audience who's interested in this show doesn't really care if this is in English. That, and has Nozomi Entertainment ever done a dub? |

A shame it wasn't dubbed into English? The heck? It was a miracle that it was even licensed at all. We should be grateful and happy, not feeling negative about it. |

I've felt badly for Marie-Antoinette ever since I learned about her playing peasant on the grounds of Versailles. I thought it showed a yearning for a different life that the show brings to life very well, particularly spoiler[in terms of her relationship with Fersen]. I suppose there's a good lesson in how history is written by the victors in her case. "Let them eat cake," indeed. Hmph. We actually have a local legend about her, which is kind of weird for small-town Maine. Rumor has it that she was going to escape to Damariscotta, but she was imprisoned before she could board the ship. It sailed without her, but with her Persian cats, who interbred with the massive local tabby cats, giving us the Maine Coon Cat. Everyone knows the story's more false than true, but it's pretty much Damariscotta's only claim to fame besides the Pumpkin Regatta, plus it makes for a fun tale to tell the tourists.
I tend to agree with this, although I do feel some regret that the French dub wasn't available on the discs. Oh, and one thing I had to cut out of my review because of length was the fact that the depictions of Versailles are excellent - every room is recognizable and there's a real sense of the grandeur and opulence of the place. If you've been there, you will immediately recognize where the story is taking place. |

Realistically speaking, yes. The anime takes some liberties with history, as most historical fiction does. |

Unfortunately for me , i am going to have to pass on this series since unfortunately it doesnt have an english dub. |
