I'm not trying to be rude, but I don't really understand how people could like this comic. It really doesn't have a plot that interests me :\

This is good news for Megatokyo, I rember Piro writing about the problems that he was having with this old publisher, and hope this turns out well for him. The only thing that I am somewhat disappointed with is the rerelase of book one - how are the Megatokyo books going to match up on my bookcase now?
As for why people like Megatokyo - it deals with alot of topics that people that are around computers alot can identify with. |

hey I love this comic and am very excited about Dark Horse releasing it...just hoping it won't be too expensive as DK prices tend to run alittle higher then others...

According to the press release it will retail at 9.95$, and is expected to arrive January 2004.

ah, missed that..I don't know how...
and I don't mind the fact that they are rereleasing book one...but I like to collect things/buy things...I actually already have 2 copies of book one too...

Like everything, it's subjective. The Comic appeals most to those that like both Anime and Gaming (as well as those of us that like to mod our computers). Personally I fit perfectly into MT's demographic, and I happen to like the comic a lot. As for the plot... personally that's actually one of the weakest points of the comic, I like the gags a lot more. I'm not saying that the plot is downright bad, but it's not good enough to carry the series on its own (imho). From my understanding, Fred's actually putting a lot of thought & effort into the plot, and there are probably people who appreciate that much more than I do... |

I'm sure the MegaTokyo is a good comic...after hearing it from several other people. But, I only have one thing against it. I'm not a big Dark Horse fan. I've seen their printing and translation and frankly. i'm not impressed. It's kind of a shame though. But, at least they aren't trying to sell it for 15.95 U.S. like Blade of the Immortal (which costs about 32 in Canada).

Ok I am wondering..
What does translation have anything to do with Megatokyo which is in ENGLISH? 
Also I don't understand how a translation is bad if people have no idea how to read Japanese to judge that it is bad! Unless you are fluent in Japanese then I can understand that, but majority of the people bitching have no clue about Japanese besides sushi, sayonara and baka! hahaha! God! this is just like Fanboy Generation X gahahahaha!!! |

I find Megatokyo to be a shallow, vapid excuse for the author to dramatize his highly uninteresting personal life. He cannot write humor, nor can he draw very well. I get sick of hearing about his fiancee and his fans and his blah blah blah... I get sick of seing his protagonist being hit on by "cute" Japanese girls. When the "Piro" character was around, they relied entirely on 1337 speak and 'b33r' for jokes, now they just recycle tired old concepts like 'ph33r the cute ones' (this is the "OMG DOOM SO FUNNY" sense of humor I find particularly revolting and repetitive) and, of course, the main character in clumsy relationships with X cute girl of the week.
Not my cup of tea, but anime fans lap it up like hogs at the trough. I do respect his business savvy; he knows how to sell books to fanboys. -Z |

I'm sorta inbetween, Zac had some good points. The whole elite speak is only funny the first time. But I disagree about the plot. Right now as it is, its disjointed and long as hell. What's important is he has done several aspects right. There are comics that are just for humor but when they try to do some kind of drama it isn't that good. Megatokyo actually does a good job of the relationships in my opinion. The only thing that I wonder about is how long is he going to piddle around until he starts getting the main plot threads either resolved or on there way, period.
Also the drawing style is unique, as simplistic as it may look its identifiable as his signature. So yes I guess he does know how to "go to market"

I used to read Megatokyo religiously... I began to notice it becoming bogged down in an incomprehensible plot which I didn't understand at all. I stayed around for the humor and because I wanted to know what happened to the interesting, likable characters. Then eventually the humor stopped being funny and the characters stopped being likable... Probably because I had no idea what was supposed to be happening.
And I agree with your opinion that it's fanboy-oriented... I'd feel kinda embarrassed to read it now, because the people who seem to read it always seem to be the kind of people who know two words in Japanese and act like they're fluent

I was waiting for someone to say this. I was afraid I'd get flamed by all the rabid MT fans. I saw him at Sakura Con and he literally had hundreds of groupies around him at his panels that it was hard to walk around the con. Anywan, this is what happens when a comic author puts himself into a comic - you get boring, uninteresting, self-serving crap. Oh, I used to read it for a while when it was fresh and new, but I eventually found Piro's "humor" and tired harem storylines retarded. It just got old. There was no real focus. Just clumsy relationships and plots that go nowhere and really dull material. It's like he's trying too hard to be Rumiko Takahashi or Kosuke Fujishima. And I really hate Largo and his idiotic 1337-speak. I've also found his character designs really weird with the huge, always half-closed almond eyes and overly-round faces, all looking depressed and/or sarcastic. I could go on, but you get the picture. It's great that someone like him can break into the industry and actually make some dough. But I sure hope that there's enough of a fanboy audience out there to keep his title afloat at Dark Horse. Otherwise, this will end very badly.
Right on the money. That's exactly the kind of people I saw lingering around him at the con. They all tended to be young, newbie anime fans. The same kind of newbies that have been spamming these boards as of late (present company excluded). |

Well, you certaintly cant argue that Fred hasn't been sucessful. He is very popular, and does what he loves.
If I wanted slapstick (which I do), I go to Homestar Runner. If I want relationship humor, I go to Megatokyo. .... as might be evidenced by my avatar... |

I've never had a problem with Dark Horse per se, but I can't stand Studio Proteus. I'm really glad to see DH getting away from them, and I hope that Megatokyo does well. |
