Every time I take a peek at this remake, I always seem to be blown away by how well made it seems to be. I finally decided to import the BD's. I am excited, and I hope that it lives up to my high expectations when I finally watch it.

I wonder if it'll replace the original when you tell someone to go watch Yamato because they're suffering from post LoGH-depression. Unlike the usual and rightfully reasoned response to remakes, this is honestly more exciting and interesting, whereas I feel old Yamato 74 importance is derived more from its influence and novelty than actually being any kind of masterpiece. Not to mention, it's far better looking. Not even just because it's newer, but it's one of the better series visually right now, definitely top of the line OVA tier.
If someone asked whether they need to see the original series, I'd respond that this was more than enough unless they just wanted to note the differences. |

I want to see this legally streaming so bad..
Hmm.. good question on whether to tell someone to see the original or see this one. Outside of Japan I haven't seen the "original" legally streamed anywhere but those bootleg copies on Youtube. Starblazers is on Netflix (season 1 at least which this of course covers) but honestly, I don't see why anyone would go back to see that one when they can see this one that's just better from what I see of the snippets they show us. Only us old folks would tell someone to see the original in it's chopped up, horribly dubbed glory because it's a nostalgia thing that we all shared when we were kids. For those that missed it I think a lot will be lost in the translation to see it in that format. Personally I've always loved the story and if this is done better I'd strongly suggest they see this one and skip the original. Hard to explain to a 15 year old how much the original made me run home from school every day to see this thing on TV. They'd probably give me funny looks when they see what Star blazers looks and sounds like now.

Well, the one thing the original series has going for it is its followups. You have two more TV series (known Comet Empire and Bolar Wars in the Star Blazers Universe but simply as Yamato II and III in Japan) and then you've got a series of movies - Farewell to Yamato (alternate telling of Yamato II/Comet Empire that was in cinemas while the second TV series was being produced), New Voyage, Be Forever Yamato, Final Yamato, and in much more recent years, Yamato Resurrection. There's a much bigger world to see in the original Yamato universe, and it's definitely worth seeing. |

I limited the content to the original Space Battleship Yamato continuity (TV series and movies from the original TV series through Final Yamato) and the original characters, and deliberately excluded both 2520 and Dai Yamato as they are both at best derivative works and certainly aren't either considered to be Yamato canon. Just as well too because 2520's first episode was just plain awful. |
