I'm still pretty unsure about this. The promos have been a mixed bag. Showing nice action and animation, but also showing really over the top dumb things. Well things that look stupid without the context to back them up. Things I'm not sure I want in GITS after the fantastic SAC.

Still, I'm very excited to watch it. I sure hope the dub is good, but since it's by Funi I doubt it. Unless, they give it to the same people behind the SAC dub.

I went to go see it in the theater. I had never seen Ghost in the Shell before, but this OVA was really well done. Not just in terms of animation quality, but visionary choices and story.

No offense, but your post or opinion really doesn't mean much if you haven't watched any of the previous GITS works.

For example, James Cameron himself said "the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence". And the Stand Alone Complex series is highly regarded as one of the best sci fi animes of all time, with many highly praising 2nd gig as being even better. So seeing a new work of a series without previous knowledge of it before makes your opinion so far null and void. Especially since this is your first time ever watching it, you can't really distinguish this apart from the other works of GITS. You could say it was incredible and holds up high in the rankings with the other GITS works, and it can be that that's true, but it could also just be because your knowledge of it so vague, it was actually a piece of crap and you don't know it. If you can later sometime, try to take the opportunity to watch the previous films and series. Not just for comparison, but just because they are some of the greatest works of fiction ever imo.

I would do that too but I'm not sure I can hold out for the first ep since stuff like this is so rare but I could see myself doing the same by the last episode or two to enjoy it to the fullest. Also, I'd totally hold out if Funi were able to get the SAC cast back since I love them so much. Either way, I agree I can't wait to see this dubbed.

Hey MajinSaga, what if they're just rating it on its own merits and not using a base of comparison to previous GitS stuff? Perhaps it's not as good, but does that make it terrible?

While I agree that he should check out the previous works by virtue of how awesome they are, I have to say that it is rather pretentious of you to state that his opinion on this new series is "null and void" because he's never seen the other works. "You can't legitimately think that Arise is good or bad until you've seen Stand Alone Complex and still felt the same way as you did beforehand"? Seriously? They're two separate entries occupying two separate continuities in a related property. Actually, come to think of it, that describes all three screen adaptations to date: Arise is the only one with a direct connection to the manga. Even if they were connected, it would still be an asinine statement (a good series is a good series is a good series; if you want to judge Arise, watch Arise, and if you want to judge SAC, watch SAC), but the fact that they are not is just the icing on the cake, my friend.

You tube has a 8-minute preview of the series.

here
This has English Subtitles, that you need turn on.

I believe from watching this, this reimaged prequel to the Manga with GitS's work/anime. Its differs from the both but its interesting.

Exactly. I'm saying this in terms of what I saw as an anime veteran, not because I am a fan of the series. And maybe that's a good thing because I have no bias. And honestly, this isn't my usually genre (see my icon? That's a character from a girl's kid show. Thought I watch a lot of other stuff). This dark, mental, action drama isn't usually in my ballpark, but I enjoyed it as a newcomer. And the directors at the event said that they are happy there are younger and new people coming into Ghost in the Shell.

Every new visual introduced in the promo videos just makes me want to see Arise all that much more. Same goes for the soundtrack from Cornelious. Considering how much effort is being put into this set of OVAs, one wonders what's in store for the 20th anniversary in 2015.

I downloaded a 720p fansubbed version already. It's a promising beginning. The OP and ED title tracks are excellent. Smile
