I hope Haikasoru brings an English translation of Empire of Corpses stateside. I'd be interested in seeing what the current Crème de crème of Japanese speculative fiction is like.

I nod approvingly at the "Best Translated Short Story" selection. Bacigalupi's short fiction is brilliant.
Awards like these might not be the most representative sample. They are voted upon by the hardcore enthusiasts only, after all. I've ran a science fiction book club, and I've seen general readers find a lot of the (similar) Hugo award books quite "meh." |

True. On the other hand, there have been some Hugo winners (recent ones even - like Among Others) which I enjoyed immensely, and I'm always interested in checking out new voices in SF. |

It really is time for a sequel to Banner/ Crest of the Stars, a new Leji Matsumoto work or a remake of Legend of Galatic Heroes if something like Bodacious Space Pirates can win anything at a Sci Fi Con. We would even be better served with a remake of Captain Tylor if its more light hearted fare that they are going for. Sigh, standard have fallen.

Bodacious Space Pirates? There must've been practically nothing else in the running. Looking back at 2012, there really wasn't. From Last Exile 2 (2011) up until From the New World (2013), nothing.

Yamato 2199 is running, and it's actually the best space opera in nearly a decade. Not even for just being a remake of Yamato, I feel it's a stronger series in narrative, pacing, direction and characters than the 1974 series; forget the art and animation being a tremendous improvement on top of that. It has action and excitement but doesn't resort to needless stupidity to reach those confrontations. Moretsu Pirates favored having absolutely nothing of consequence happen for most of its 26 episodes, and the characters never once felt threatened or in danger, giving me no reason to have my heart rate go up. Standards have been risen by this Yamato OVA/film series alone. There was a new Leiji work last year called Ozma, and it was goddamn horrible. It had no real direction, and mercifully only went for six episodes before ending with a completely unsatisfying and cobbled together conclusion that had little foreshadowing to or connection with the rest of the story. I can only hope the new Harlock film is actually well written. |

Perhaps it is you who should check the dictionary, as that is the etymology, not the meaning. Just because it's derived from that doesn't mean that's what it means or that it's all that it means. Merriam-Webster lists "sexy, voluptuous" as the third definition. |

This is a dumb argument because the anime's title isn't "Bodacious Space Pirates", its Mouretsu Pirates Arguing over the definition of "Bodacious" is idiotic. Also, for the record, the novels are "Mini-skirt Space Pirates", so whatever. |

Ummm... I liked Bodacious Space Pirates plenty, but I'm not so sure that its appropriate for it to win an award like this. It's a lot of fun and a fine space opera, but this seems like it befits something a touch more 'literary'. Pickings might have been sparse, but something like From the New World, as mentioned, would've seemed more suitable.
I found Ozma more forgettable than terrible. Captain Bainas was cool, but the rest mostly didn't register. I can't really remember the particulars of the finale off hand, but I know that I didn't think much of it. I think that its greatest weakness was lacking any significant sense of awe or atmosphere. There were no impressive great beasts like the Ohmu or sweeping wasteland vistas. (There was Ozma itself... but I can't even remember what it looked like) It also had a lead who was just a bland, slightly obnoxious 'intrepid youth' with not much else going on. That probably would've been an even less suitable winner.
You come off like the pretentious arthouse hipster douchebag character in some hack writer's screenplay that he's not shopping around anymore because novels are, y'know, actually the more culturally meaningful format and he'll totally get to work on that once Starbucks opens. Quit it. |

Yes, how terrible that I point out that the translated title of the show is meaningless in a discussion of an award it won in its native language. I mean, I'm totally not among the people arguing over what "Bodacious" means. |
