I think it's notable that the Little Witch Academia kickstarter has not only surpassed the other two anime kickstarters, but with a week to go it has surpassed their COMBINED totals. That's pretty impressive.

In fact, the KickStarter campaign has been so wildly successful, it begs the question of whether it was actually needed in the first place. Seems like the response indicates this was a very viable commercial project right from the get go as opposed to something that could only have happened through crowdfunding.

Wow, that's crazy.

I think LWA was pretty good; felt pretty much exactly like Harry Potter but with a girl.

Makes me sad the best one-shot of 2013, Death Billiards, hasn't been mentioned much after it aired though.

@Blood-: That's almost certainly why they got the funding for the first twenty minutes in the first place. Since the first episode's BD hasn't come out(thus leaving us without much data, pre-Kickstarter), I can understand why a commercial backer might be more conservative than they might otherwise be. I fully except that when the next round of LWA rolls around, it won't be so niggardly funded as episode two was ere the crowds.

@Polycell - you may be right. But considering how much over target they are and considering that the extras they are offering won't cost them much to provide, it's possible that crowdfunding may actually be more profitable for them than raising production financing the traditional way.

Especially since they clearly mentioned on their KS page they already had the funds to produce a 20 minutes long episode.
I guess it's a good way for them to test the market and fandom in general, and the response so far was astonishingly positive, but I personally still can't shake this feeling that it could have been better planned so it wouldn't have to be jammed in between other projects. Even with the latest updates, it's still not clear how much, if any, of the extra funds (over the original goal of $150 000) will go to the actual production of the anime itself... Which to me is the main reason I still haven't backed this project (even though I did help fund Time of Eve and Kick-heart). The fact that they've basically been radio-silent for almost 2 weeks didn't help either.

My guess is zero of the extra funds will go to the production of the anime itself since the original $150,000 already covers off that expense. I think Trigger is going to make a tidy little profit off of this. $350,000 over target and all you need to provide beyond what was originally promised is a commentary track and a making of doc? Yep, profitable indeed.

Studio Trigger offered the animation drawing sheet rewards from the very beginning, but titled it as "film reel cut" in the $100 and $300 tiers. I was questioning about that in their comments section and I originally thought they meant line art footage from a random scene. My confusion went on for a few more posts and as I read their FAQ: "have a random 動画カット(Douga Cut, in-between art) that was actually used in the animation process!", it finally hit me. That was when the studio posted an example to make it more clearer.

I think because that's all the premise can be, the same thing over and over with different people. Unless the writing remains impeccable and fresh, the premise is instantly stale and there's no need for a continuation. And most of the matches won't be so wild, you'd probably have clear victors and losers. It got its discussions, but there's not enough in it to keep it going months later.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Just thinking a little outside the box though, I think it might be interesting to see what other games people can play, who those two characters were, etc. I don't think everyone has to play billiards every time, haha.

I also think that while you're right that the plot might get a bit redundant, shows like Mushishi, xxxHOLiC, and Natsume Yuujinchou show that you can still be good with writing an episodic episode that follows a similar pattern every episode.

Even if they play different games and you have amazingly different personalities and backstories, the end result of each match won't be at all shocking. It honestly sounds more like the beginning of another Hell Girl, which is amazingly tiring even with completely different settings and circumstances, that you already knew the outcomes and end of every episode made it really hard to care. This would be a show remaining in the same room the entire time, it doesn't lend itself well to anything beyond a short film.

In those shows you listed, different things can be explored, from the physical to the psychological. In this, it's just going to be the same spoiler["competition, one goes to Heaven, one goes to Hell, remains ambiguous because the Noh Masks may be red herrings".] I think the first episode only worked because of the slight "twist" at the very end. Before that, I felt lukewarm on the short. Unless, they do go another route and not every episode is about the two people competing, but maybe go into other areas of why that's there and who the others were, but it doesn't sound that interesting. Contrast that with LWA, where you have an entire wizarding world and school that can be illustrated, and it's clear to see why people are more vocal about their support.

To be fair, that initial goal was for 15 mins only. This extends it to 20 mins for a total of 40 mins. And it covers extra rewards:
- audio commentary track
- making of LWA2 documentary
- Original Sound Track
- Gengasyu (Line art collection book)
- and now Douga cuts (these are the originals too)

in addition:
Quote:
If the stretch goal is reached, the audio commentary and the making documentary will have subtitles in the following languages.
-English
-Japanese
-Spanish
-French
-German
-Italian
-Chinese

(and: " ... We feel that it would not hurt to have our animators rewarded just a little bit more.")

plus future possibilities mentioned, such as figure, TV or film

For comparison, Kick Heart was $201,164 for 10 mins of quite frankly, lesser animation, but with english dub, with less sub languages, and less rewards

@ configspace - out of everything you've mentioned, the only thing that is a significant expense is the extra five minutes of animation. I have no problem with the animators getting a bonus.

My overall hope is that the fantastic response to this Kickstarter will prompt somebody to go, "hmmm, it's almost like we could make a full TV show out of this..."

Which they haven't really announced, by the way. Here's what Trigger's social media rep had to say on the subject yesterday, when asked about the total length of the episode:

Question (link):
Quote:
@Trigger_Tattun Can we have a clarification about the length of LWA2 please? Will it be 35mins or 40mins long? Thanks!

.....
Answer (link):

Quote:
@RollingPirahna I really do not have an answer to that, and probably will not have a solid answer to literally the very very last minute.

Quote:
@RollingPirahna If the situation are similar to the first episode, we probably will end up using every second of the time frame.

Quote:
@RollingPirahna All I can say is that it is floating around 35 minutes to 40minutes.

So for all we know, the project could reach is stretch goal and the episode could still be 35 minutes long (20+15).
