Great interview.

Fantastic little insight about Anno. You always hear what a tyrant and evil genius he is, and how he does things to insult or offend otaku.

It's nice to hear from his closest working partner that he is just a big otaku himself.

Anno has always been a well known otaku going back to the 80s. His jabs at otaku sometimes stemmed from his self loathing, which was especially true during the 90s. From most reports he's a lot more mellow now.

Next year?!?! Not this coming November, like the previous volume?!?! Oh how you torture me even with the manga having finally concluded. Oh well, just a little longer, and it'll definitely be worth the wait.

Good interview, they dodged the issue of the last Rebuild film like a boss Razz

Still, it's nice to hear from one of my favorite japanese artists from time to time.

Nice interview, ever since Tumblr became an addiction to me (mostly due to using it to find work of manga artists and so on) I've seen some of his works and became something of a fan. I also didn't know he also worked with Mamoru Hosoda, but looking at the cover of wolf children *still need to see the film myself* I should have known that was him...was he involved at all in summer wars at all?

I'll be keeping track of him from now on since I really like his style.

Yeah, he did Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time as well as Wolf Children. Him and Mamoru Hosoda seem to have something of a partnership going on and I must say that it's working out very well so far.

I am surprised at how much of a struggle Tsurumaki and Sadamoto had on Rebuild of Evangelion trying to come up with the characterization of Mari Makinami.

Ultimately I think they abandoned this by the third film.

I was interested in Sadamoto's advice to Tsurumaki when writing Rebuild of Eva: he said that working on the manga, in his experience, out of Asuka, Kaworu, and Toji, you really only have time to develop two out of those three. Thus he didn't use Toji that much in the manga (and ultimately killed him instead of only crippling him).

Tsurumaki felt there was truth in this and wanted to downplay the "school characters" from Rebuild of Eva 2 - which makes sense. Only so much screentime, us it on Asuka by that point.

Problem was that Anno later got the idea that the story should be "streamlined" to the point that even if they did have available time, they should cut any scene not immediately focused on Shinji. So that gutted the rest of it.

I am slightly confused by Sadamoto's intent on the final section of the Evangelion manga: did the world "restart"? Or is it the far future of the original timeline? Because he includes a frame pointing out the fossilized remains of the Mass Production Evas and someone explains that they're ancient ruins and no one knows what they are.

So is this like the end of Wolf's Rain? Everyone got reborn/reincarnated in a new generation thousands of years later?

And how did Shinji get Misato's cross in the final frame?

Use spoiler tags, please. Not everyone is up to date with that one.

I didn't know this! Both titles are on my "Plan to watch" list but I had no idea Sadamoto was involved. Now, I have more reasons to go watch them asap.

Not much of an issue, but how far is it coming along? Did he stop working on it already?

spoiler[In either case it's a redo. It flies in the face of the whole point of the story - you can't run away, you can't make things go away, you have to live with all the shit that has happened.]

IF you won, that is! *sigh* I was so sad when I went! I bought Der Mond off Amazon the week before JUST for the signing... Just to find out that it was a 50-50 draw, which neither me, nor the person I went with, won to get in v_v... Apparently a lot of signings are worked as a lotto system at cons? But yeah, I pouted a lot that day v_v...

You couldn't meet with him at JX unless you were press and made special arrangements. Even at Sadamoto's panel you couldn't take pictures or video.

Or if you were one of the ones who bought a premium ticket stupid con should have put in bold buy one or else their isn't a chance in hell of getting a signature and saying hello to him. If I knew that and if they were such money whores they should have named their price and I would have gladly payed for the chance. Payed top dollar to get my copy of Carmine Artbook and didn't get the chance was so let down, first come first served in line my ass. If the con doesn't fix that shit next year then I'll never go again.

At least I was lucky enough to get a front row seat for his panel but had to line up about 2 hours early and sit through some pop concert of five 12 year olds or you would have to sit way in the back. Their was plenty of seats though, for all those who wanted to attend wasn't even half full. I would have lined up to ask him a question but I didn't really have one I wanted to ask.

Oh V guy I think it's like Rahxephon where the world pretty much was put back on track the way it would have went if their was no Angels or Evangelions. That Shinji still lost both parents but was able to go on with a normal life, and all traces of the previous world were erased from peoples memories. As for Misato's cross either he met her in this new world or it's a momento from the previous world that some how survived and even if Shinji didn't know the meaning behind it, knew it was a important keepsake.

I remember someone asking about the End of Eva Movie ending compared to the manga ending. Sadamoto said basically that they are 2 separate works the Anime is Anno's ending and the Manga is the way he ended his. That they are 2 different pieces and since he was in control of the manga that was how he wanted it to end.

Oh and that image is one of the original drawings he did at the con behind the scenes apparently it took him 2 hours to draw and the images in the corners are local spots to the bay area. Top right San Jose Winchester Mystery House, bottom right SF Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. I forgot what the top left is.

Too bad his other drawing of Asuka in plugsuit on top of a Shelby Cobra that took him 35 minutes to draw was not put up for auction. Couldn't even take a picture of it, the bastards. It was beautiful I would have bid through the my savings at a chance to buy it. Unfortunately they took that beauty back to France to auction over their the not-so-nice-people.

I can guarantee you, unless it's Japan Expo again you'll never see Sadamoto at another Con they have some kind of deal with him since he appears from time to time at the Japan Expo Europe. From what he said Sadamoto's last appearance in the United States was back in 1991 after Nadia came out and well before Evangelion put him on the map.

There were a lot of people, including myself, who felt the same way and would have bid just as much, if not more, on those items. Same with some of the sketches he made during his autograph sessions that were cut short so he could sketch for upper echelon staff.

I wouldn't mind having the French bid on the items as long as the US attendees were not only allowed to bid on the items, but also to bid on any artwork generated during the European JX cons. I don't think I would be as bitter about this if this were to be done. However, JXUSA staff seems to be quite tight-lipped on this, which tells me that the French staff has already said "no".

He's been to Fanime a couple of times in the past. Last time was 2008, he came as a last second addition along with the rest of Gainax studios.

And thanks for the interview, he really didn't talk much at his own panel, so its nice to read a few comments of his here. And thanks for posting the picture of the JX poster he drew. It would have been cool if they allowed everyone in the room to have taken a closer look at both drawings he did rather than take off immediately when the panel ended. The image looks really cool, same with the Asuka one he did at this panel.

As for JXs autograph policy, they probably should make it so you can only get one autograph/sketch per guest for the whole convention. Speaking as a premium user who took advantage of our early entry access, I had multiple chances to get sketches from the artists, Sadamoto especially. But I can see the inherent unfairness, though, and I don't think its fair that others who would come after would be shut out. Although their draw system was definitely not 50/50. I had extra chances for the draw on Sunday but still came up empty. That's 0 for 6. And others lost out as well, so if you came later, you did have chances, although you would only have one shot at it. But yea, probably make the policy one per person per guest in the future to help spread out the number of people who can get something signed.
