I do think that the 2007 anime is better than the manga if you're curious, Jason. Things like Shiroe and the Naska arc get a lot more time to breathe in the 2007 series than they did in the manga, I think you'd be quite pleased. Characters who were maybe only a blip in the manga (like Jomy's childhood friends) get much more important roles in the anime without feeling like those roles were forced in. Also, the entire last third leading up to the ending is quite different, so there will be some new stuff in there. It's really a shame that no one has taken this one out of Bandai's grave yet (I'm kind of betting on Nozomi, to match their movie) because it was clearly one of their best titles in their catalog ever. Speaking of the movie, probably impressive for the time, but now it's like watching Cliffnotes.

But I still found it worthwhile to get the manga even though I'd seen the anime because yeah, the art is awesome, and the entire last third was different, but I feel like experiencing both really completes the experience.

Heck it's not just going out of print, Vertical has said that they need to destroy any of the stock they have left so we can't even hope for dwindling shipments to go out to retailers for new fans to find it later, makes me wonder what the details of the contract must have been.

I have seen the anime version only. Seems I have similar views of it, you do of the manga. It was simply so predictable, everything out in a sequence, made it somewhat boring to sit through. I did enjoy it for the most part though, although it was a bit prone to melodrama. It made a lot of the characters not all that likable and annoying.

Wow. That's so sad.

I've never read the manga, but I've seen the anime. It was the last blind buy I ever did and I really enjoyed it. Despite that, I don't have any desire to read the manga.

The only thing about the anime I didn't fully understand was the subplot with Physis. I understand that spoiler[she was supposed to be the female version of Keith and that her powers were given to her by Soldier Blue, but I don't remember there being any concrete reason Blue was interested in her aside from the fact she had memories of Earth. Then there's the fact that when it's revealed that Physis never actually had powers to begin with, the original Mu don't seem that bothered by it and don't seem to hold anything against Blue for lying to them.] Although perhaps these questions are addressed and I just don't remember.

Thanks for this Jason: this is exactly the kind of unconsidered gem that I come to ANN to find out about.

I've been meaning to buy these books for a long time. I guess now is a good time as ever to buckle down and purchase.

I would love for someone brave enough to license Song of the Wind and Trees but I truly don't think it will ever happen. It's so amazingly old, it gets extremely f***ed up when going into Gilbert's childhood (among other things) and it's 17 volumes. Plus, sounds like Takemiya doesn't want to share anymore, ha.

Such a shame.

People also said classic stories like Rose of Versailles and Heart of Thomas would never get released.... there's still a shred out hope....

Still, I agree that it's a loooooooooooong shot....
