That's a horrendous opening weekend for Harlock.

Harlock was on much more screens and yet earned less than a third of Ghibli... I don't stalk box office data but it looks like crushing defeat.

It's terrible, especially since its rumored budget is around 3 billion yen...

Toei Animation and Shinji Aramaki's CG-animated Space Pirate Captain Harlock film opened at #2. The film remakes the classic anime Space Pirate Captain Harlock with Toei Animation's highest production budget ever at the equivalent of more than 30 million U.S. dollars. Shun Oguri and Haruma Miura star as the title pirate and the new character Yama, respectively. The film earned 133,929,210 yen (US$1,355,899) on 578 screens.

Well, good luck, it has no chance of opening wide in America/Canada. No one's going to risk another Final Fantasy.

I dont know,Captain Harlock is pretty popular in France, plus "Wolf Children" had a nation wide release there and its success exceeded every expectation.Though yeah,no way this movie will get its money back. Its a real shame, after Space Battleship Yamato 2199 I thought this might have a chance to become a hit.

Is 2199 also all-CG? I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

009 Re: Cyborg made $873,000 in its first three days released on 125 screens. So I dont think that CG was the deciding factor of Harlocks failure.

No, Yamato 2199 isn't CGI really, its CGI shading, with regular animation. Its pretty sexy, I hate CGI usually.
