Why was this not news until the console stretch goal was hit?

You mean Might No. 9 itself? ANN's posted news articles for its launch, its funding, and a couple stretch goals I think.

Strange... I never noticed it in the feeds. I ended up hearing about it from someone who posted it in the UBC Ani Facebook group.

I do see that I skipped one news item but there's no way I'd see something just posted in the X-Button. I don't read every post (especially briefs or columns), I just read relevant stuff that shows up in the feeds. Otherwise I'd have no time for a normal life.

I haven't pledged just yet, but I wonder if you pledge enough to get a physical copy, that you can now pick what platform it's on, rather than it just defaulted to a PC version.

I doubt there will be a "physical release" of this game unless it hits really big.

Those "physical releases" have nearly done in several companies -- INCLUDING CAPCOM -- in the past when they overestimated popular demand.

That tended to happen more during the cartridge days when it was next-to-impossible to be completely sure of demand for a game title and companies had to take a leap of faith when releasing games on silicon chips. Capcom itself was nearly done in by back-to-back releases of Street Fighter II and other 16-bit titles where they overprinted the numbers of cartridges for the SNES and Genesis. They became solvent again only after the release of Resident Evil on the PS1. As it is, the only fighting game release in years that came close to what they achieved with the first two SFC/SNES SF II cart releases was SF IV. The numbers sold on later 16-bit cart and CD-ROM releases in the fighting game genre were nowhere near what they sold of Resident Evil and even MegaMan on optical disc.

It was easier to print to demand with CD-ROM's... You could mill those far quicker and minimize losses in case the market wasn't there for a game. It could take a month or more to manufacture more 16-bit carts of a title if you had an unexpected hit in your hands; for CD-ROM's, the turnaround time for new copies in a sell-out scenario was two weeks or less. Even two weeks is an eternity for something as faddish as videogames and the demand for a title could definitely vaporize within a month.

With download, the estimation game is even more a thing of the past.

My guess is that to see anything like a "buy-to-own physical copy" Mighty No. 9 would have to be a huge upfront seller. At least hundreds of thousands of copies to be sure. Chances are that it would still be limited to one region (physical copy-wise) like Capcom's recent Darkstalkers/Vampire Resurrection and D&D: Mystaria collections were (Japan-only; PS3 BD for the first and PS3/XBox 360 discs the second).
