Can't believe everyone unanimously enjoyed Gravity so much. I watched it on proper "So Cal" IMAX with no expectations (didn't read any reviews) and walked away thinking it seemed like a different movie I skipped altogether, 2012, because every scene seemed like cheating death by mere moments before the next death-cheating scene... I mean it didn't suck by any means, decent movie and interesting effects, but otherwise rather meh.
Ok comparing it to 2012 is probably not completely fair... but I couldn't help but think it had some key similarities. |

In re Homestuck: the story is all Hussie now, though the earlier MS Paint Adventure strips were forum directed. There are artist and music groups that create some content for the site, though that's more a selected group of collaborators than a pure fan community thing.

I haven't read the manga, but I absolutely love the new anime of Hunter X Hunter. It might be the best shounen series I've ever seen.
Btw, the guy with the pipe's name is Morel. |

Kill La Kill has a chance of airing on Toonami. I guess one of the few advantages of the Aniplex handling it in the west as well is that they seem to try and put some things on Toonami. SoA and Durrara for example.

I could definitely see Kill la Kill on Toonami, especially after the Space Dandy announcement. And Dandy is also a series that is coming to TV before DVD/BD.

-Oh god, Warriors of the Wind... I had the self-induced "pleasure" of watching Nausicaa for the very first time on BD, which looked beautiful, & then watching WotW the next day for a review, which was then followed up with Robotech the Movie. From what I could find out for my review Susan Davis voiced "Zandra". On its own the movie is okay-at-best, but certainly not great, but I think the worst part about it was that it took out all of the subtlety that the original movie had. Once Zandra had a complete inner monologue talking about how messed up these fights are & how it messed up life for everyone in just a day I was slightly offended. One of the things I loved the most about Nausicaa was that it never really pushed its themes & message onto the viewer; it was subtle & let the viewer realize everything on his/her own. WotW, on the other hand, assumed that "kids are dumb" and outright states what the message is.
-Since no one brought up what Season 1 of Ranma was called, Viz gave it the subtitle "The Digital Dojo"... Which I'm going to guess makes absolutely no sense. in terms of Ranma. I have that S1 DVD set, but I'll probably upgrade to the BD set when Viz releases it & then finally watch Ranma, but only that first season. -I'll agree that anime & "horror" don't seem to mix together all too well, but there are definitely some really creepy, eerie, & discomforting anime out there. Essentially, if you want horror in the way we think of that genre via Hollywood & live-action movies, even ones from Japan, you don't watch anime for that. If you want something that can deliver some chills & unsettling feelings then you can find some anime that deliver that. I'm not watching all of it on Halloween, but this last week of October I'll be watching Sci-Fi HARRY, an anime that I tried watching years ago but stopped because every time I watched more of it I always got really freaked out & uncomfortable, to the point that I couldn't watch more than 2 or 3 episodes at a time. That's not a bad thing, though, because that's what the show was meant to do, so I'm looking forward to finally seeing all of it; if I get freaked out again watching it then that's great. -For anime that I like that everyone else hates, I have a few of those as well, but right now I have to say Zaizen Jotaro is a good choice for me. Yes, that first episode is outright crap, which is where most of the hate came from, but after that episode comes the actual story that the show tells, which I find to be a fun take on dirty politics & business with enjoyable characters & Zaizen himself simply steals the show & is always a joy to see in action; Teruaki Ogawa's performance only seals the deal. Obviously, the subject material is extremely niche & the animation is barely there, which is where the rest of the hate came from, but I still assert that Zaizen Jotaro was unfairly hated on because of a horrible first impression that crappy (& pointless) first episode gave. With me, though, it usually comes down more to me really liking shows that no one else knows about, like B't X & Ring ni Kakero 1 (essentially, Masami Kurumada's non-Saint Seiya works in general), Monkey Turn, Fantastic Children, etc. |

I think that I'd enjoy an entire episode of ANNCast devoted to discussing the Hanna-Barbera corpus. Talk about Wacky Races and you'll have you thin, tangential connection to Japan.
Man, did I watch a lot of Yogi Bear when I was a kid. When Zac was talking about Noozles, I was pretty confused for a while because I kept thinking of The Wuzzles, which is kind of a different thing. I remember that I used to watch Noozles on Nickelodeon when I was very young. I don't remember much about it and I probably conflated it with Adventures of the Little Koala in my memory. I'm not very responsive to horror. The only thing that I'm especially fond of that falls under that label is the original The Haunting. I can't even recall any horror anime that I've watched. I sort of like the idea of the genre, but it almost never works out for me. I liked Gilgamesh. This seems to be an uncommon position. There really aren't any. Maybe Shiki, Higurashi, Tasogare Otomo x Amnesia, and Another, but looking for an equivalent of American cinema horror won't really yield results. Like a typical plot of a family being haunted by ghosts or something else just isn't something you see done. |

Oh god Noozles... That was the first anime I ever saw (granted I didn't even realize what anime was back then). Nickelodeon played Noozles quite often in the early days. There were some dark moments in that show (the girls grandfather being trapped in some sort of alternate dimension bubble, and you only see his shadow... always made me sad). I cracked up when Daryl and Mike were very quick to correct Zac about Noozles being a totally different show from the Adventures of Little Koala (another anime staple of my youth).

Sword Art is a copy of Accel World but those both suck.
Princess Tutu is a copy of Pretear but those are both great (and Tutu is better). Guilty Crown is awful compared to Code Geass. Valvrave, though... Valvrave gives me emotions other than "I wish I were watching Code Geass" (which is what Guilty Crown made me think). Valvrave feels like watching something new, and it makes me care. But Guilty Crown is awful. (Disclaimer: I reaaaaaaly love Code Geass. Huge fangirl for years.) ahhh I would love to hear what they'd say about Toonami post-Space Dandy announcement. Wider audience seeing shows that are better: I feel like Attack on Titan has this potential. I feel like some famous person could talk about it somewhere and get people into it, and it could take off. Michelle Phan talks about it a lot, and that's always exciting. I'd love to see if someone started watching it because of her... but a lot of people could really get into it, if someone gave them a reason to check it out. |

I really only study anime if I can get into it in the first place or if I really hate it or the guy who made it, and want to find reasons to bitch about it (this is the main reason I will find any reason to get into an argument about FMA).
Saw the Anchorman 2 trailer, and my feelings was that I loved it while being cautious about it. The cruise control joke is fantastic while at times it felt like they were just repeating jokes (the condom scene is basically the cologne scene) My view on the artbook and postcards from Aniplex are that are just a cheap way to give the appearance of value. They can just slap down 5 things even if the only thing of worth might just be a soundtrack or artbook and rarely is that even worth it (Project X Zone had a nice soundtrack while Dragons Crown has a great art book) |

Of course, I only watch the Japanese versions, raw, with scripts translated by my Japanese-Canadian girlfriend who has a father that works at Nintendo that said you can find Mew in the truck by the pier. Great, I just parodied myself into depression. |
