So now everything Speed Racer / Mach Go Go Go is back in Tatsunoko's hands.
Gee, they worked out a new deal with Sentai here not too long ago. Maybe they could negotiate a nice nostalgia release? Maybe a classic dub for the old fans like me and a sub for the folks that want the original source. Well we can dream, can't we? Mark Gosdin |

All I can say is that with this matter settled, we can only hope that Discotek can negotiate with Tatsunoko to help bring the series over in a complete dub and sub collection. I'm sure classic anime enthusiasts would appreciate a complete Mach Go Go Go collection.

Oh,
It's a very safe bet that Speed Racer WILL become available in the US again... in an AUTHORIZED, LEGAL release. Preferably an affordable quality release that's not ridiculously overpriced. Who will release the series is anyone's guess... (It'll be Sentai Films/Section 23 or Funimation most likely.) It's just too popular to stay out of the public eye for long. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that a Blu ray release could be forthcoming unless the economics rule it out. It depends on how many sets the licensee thinks they can sell. I don't think people will pay over $100 per box for a Blu ray release of the entire series, though. $50-$60 for the whole thing, maybe... The DVDs would have to be much cheaper... I think the whole series has sold for under $40 on DVD in the past. Whether Mach Go Go will ever be subbed and unedited for the US? I wouldn't count on it unless the licensee is prepared to do some serious technical work and spend more money on a seamless branching release. There could always be a separate subbed release, yes, but they might only sell a few hundred copies of that in the States. SB releases can cause issues with many video players. They're meant for minor editing issues, NOT multiple cuts and large revisions to films. Most "director's cuts" have minor revisions of a scene or two that are easy to encode and don't usually play havoc with video players. I'm sure there are enough edits that the Japanese Mach Go Go video can't just be matched up to the 1960s English audio and be able to flip the audio back and forth. There HASN'T been a seamless branching release of any Japanese series (that's been edited for TV) in the US that I'm aware of. The subbed versions of Macross, Mospeada, and Southern Cross were released separate from the Robotech edited versions. The edits to the English releases made it impractical to bundle it all together. Macross DID get a new dub separate from Robotech Extended/Remastered but there were still too many edits to it (Robotech version) for a practical SB release with the Robotech audio... The dubbed Macross from what I recall didn't really sell that well but sales of Robotech across the board covered the subbed sets (and Macross dub) regardless of whether the non-Robotech releases sold very well. ***************************************** The reality is that Speed Racer is a mainstream release, not a cult release that will sell just a few thousand copies in the US. I don't think it will millions of copies in the US now BUT tens and hundreds of thousands is not out of the question. Whether that potential will still allow a Japanese audio release is a good question The dub is one of the ingredients that made the show a cult classic in the US. This show will definitely not be released without that original dub! |

I have zero nostalgia for this series but it's good to know that Tatsunoko got the rights back.
If someone is willing to release the entirety of the 1970's Cutey Honey and Mazinger Z series on DVD in North America as sub only I'm sure a Mach Go Go Go DVD will happen eventually. |

Don't forget Anime Sols. Tatsunoko might prefer to dump, er, sell its extra Speed Racer crap rotting in its warehouse, and that's the only route possible.

Well glad to see Tatsunoko got the Speed Racer rights back to them. Looks like maybe Sentai Films or Discotek could pick it up in the future.
I do agree with GeorgeC, this series is a classic among anime fan, I hope future release by either Sentai or Discotek include both the dub and sub. |

Discotek, I'd trust with genuine-sourced vintage anime from the Japanese owners. I still remember when Carl Macek tried to sell us Speed in the 90's, for his whole message of "Anime's not just Speed Racer anymore!...Well, okay, you do pop-nostalgically remember Speed Racer don't you? It's sorta like that." |

Definitely good news. Hopefully we'll see a new release from another company soon. Although the Lionsgate releases are still available, they had their share of issues, such as fitting 13 episodes on one disc by speeding (no pun intended) a couple of them up.
There has been. FUNimation's original Dragon Ball Z singles all had seamless branching for the opening and ending sequences, where the US sequences were quite a bit shorter in length than the Japanese. They also had alternate angles to handle the episode title screens. |

I was curious about that lawsuit that occured sometime ago. Glad to see that Speed Racer or Mach Go Go Go to be more literal is back in the hands of Tatsunoko. Can't wait to see which company will negoiate to get distribution rights on it, seeing that Speed Racer Enterprise is out of the picture now.

I would rather see Sentai pick it up because like with Gatchaman & the 70s Casshan, there's a Blu-ray release in Japan for the show and they're the only ones who can bring that over here and not just use it only for DVD. As for the 90s remake, that show is much more niche so Discotek could pick that up or Anime Sols could get it and let it fail (like with the rest of their Tatsunoko titles so far) and it wouldn't matter as much. |
