Who should have retired first, Miyazaki or The Simpsons?

I saw what this week's episode is about. The plot is Comic Book Guy falls for a Japanese manga fan. So expect a lot of references to anime and manga in the episode.

Let's see:

Spirited Away with the clear, er, spiriting away and No-Face.

My Neighbor Totoro with the school bus.

Porco Russo with the cop?

I have no idea what the Krusty Burger was referencing.

Tentacle sex/rape with the mayor and his floozies. That said, he looks like something out of Futurama than anime.

More No-Face

Patty and Selma reference Kiki's Delivery Service, complete with brooms and hair bows.

Not really sure what Skinner is supposed to be, other than a box kite.

I have no idea whatsoever what the fat baby, the three little blue creatures or Moe on a stick are supposed to reference.

Can't remember seeing a three-headed dragon in anime before.

Ah, one I do know. Kwik-e-Mart is a clear reference to Howl's Moving Castle.

----------

Not a great score, I only got the obvious ones.

Not that this Simpsons scene isn't noteworthy, but why did Bob's Burgers never get a mention here when the Thanksgiving episode from 2012, "An Indecent Thanksgiving Proposal", had a direct homage to the tree growing scene in My Neighbor Totoro? I find the Bob's Burgers tribute to be a lot more "knowing" and with a point, not just incorporating random imagery from all Miyazaki movies in a general parody.

I'm not a huge fan of the Simpsons, but I think I need to sit down and watch this episode when it airs. This made my day and gave me something to smile about. Smile

Not bad, as far as the Simpsons references go these days. I kind of like how they did it.

Chief Wiggum and Ralph are a double Porco Rosso/Ponyo reference. Fat Gerald is a reference to Yubaba's child in Spirited Away. I think the nerds in the bush are a reference to some of the minor forest spirits in Princess Mononoke. Moe is the Turnip Prince from Howl's Moving Castle. The three-headed dragon is Kearney, Jimbo, and Dolph combined with Haku's dragon form, also from Spirited Away.

Thank you.

It's been a while since I watched those Ghibli movies so the various details eluded me. I can't believe I forgot about Yubaba's giant baby, but there you go.

I thought it was a Spirited Away reference but now that you mention it it could well actually be a Porco Rosso one, or both. Also Ralph Wiggum as the titular character from Ponyo.

Looks like Princess Mononoke to me but I'm not 100% sure.

This one has me baffled as well. :S

The baby is a reference to Yubaba's son fro Spirited Away, Moe is the scarecrow fro Howl's Moving Castle spoiler[the one who turns out to be the missing prince].

I think it was only three headed due to the bully trio being a trio rather than anything from Miyazaki. I think it was a reference to Haru from Spirited Away.

EDIT: Ninja'ed!

I don't know, I wasn't doing the feed back then. But also sometimes we just miss things, which is why we always appreciate and value tips from our readers.

As much as I dislike The Simpsons nowadays, this was actually pretty nice homage. Kudos to them.
