Never been to Osaka, or Japan in general, but any city that inspired what is easily the best part of KlK can't be all bad.

Loved the podcast. I've always been curious what it's like to go on one of these tours (and how expensive it might be). Thanks for the first hand experience on what to expect (or not expect). Good advice for going to any foreign country (not just Japan).

A: This podcast was great, and I know what I am going to have to set up to get this done.

I just wanted to say though Zac, at least in the states we do have religious places that are also giant tourist traps. In the Northeast, in New York City, we have Saint Patrick's Cathedral, which is the heart of Roman Catholicism in New York.. and also has busses of tourists from all over visiting it. Bishops and priests still work there, there is still Mass there.. but it is also a major tourist attraction, so it isn't a uniquely Japanese thing.

On escalators I once was exiting a station in Tokyo and decided to spare my legs and use the escalator. Good thing too, at the top of the escalator was, another escalator, at the top of that escalator was, another escalator etc. Five or six levels of escalators in all, the station was on a hill and the line was deep underground at that point.

For non station escalators I recommend the ones on Enoshima Island. It is quite a climb to get to the top and when you get to the other side of the island some of the sights require a long stairway down and back.

Thanks to whoever sent in the question about Sapporo. I've long thought it would be a fun winter trip to head there for skiing and snow festivals… maybe Snow Miku if that keeps going for a few more years.

I never really found any places to be tourist traps. I know Japan's religion is seen mostly as a tradition than belief.

Sounds like they had tons of things packed into those ten days. I've gone four time to Japan and find there is so much to do and not enough time to do it. Even when i stay a month at a time.

When my friends and I went to Kyoto, we never knew how long those tori gates went until we were two hours in. We strayed off the path from the other tourists which was much better. I really like going to places where there are less tourists like in Aomori or Sendai area. I found Tokyo the least fun as well. Other places were way more interesting.
