I never read "All You Need Is Kill", but the storyline sounds like a war-centered version of Higurashi, not that that's a bad thing. I'm actually quite interested in seeing this movie.

I have read it and I'm starting to get worried.

I think those who haven't read the light novel or the manga are going to enjoy this a helluva lot more than those who have as the only way that I could tell that this film was the same thing was that Rita still has her original name.

If not for that I would have just gone, "Hmmm this reminds me of All You Need is Kill! I might enjoy this!"

I think you;re just gonna have to take the film as being entirely separate from the original story if you have read the novel and want to enjoy the film.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat

I'm sure the movie will explain this but how does one become a Lt. Col. which according to Wikipedia is just above the rank of major and just below colonel without seeing a days combat? High ranking family or something? In the light novel it makes sense because Kiriya is just a new recruit, why make him a Lt. Col. ...Cruise's age?

Maybe Officers School? Grunts don't like that when someone didn't rise thru the ranks but rather got their position thru Officers School.

One of the most amazing things I've thought about this movie is that anyone in Hollywood was able to get the original author to go along with this. I don't how the original author feels about this. I'd be even more surprised if someone tried to do an American version of "Sword Art Online." I don't know how it will be done, but I'd be surprised if anyone would attempt such a thing.

Wrong. All officers become so through a commissioning source. The only way for someone to go from enlisted to officer is through what you term as "Officer's School." It is quite easy to get that high of a rank without seeing a day in combat if you're service as been during peacetime. Have some semblance of what you're talking about before answering a person's question.

Get paid to have his book turned into a big-budget Hollywood movie? Of course he'll go along with it.

Calm down man, the guy was making an innocent assumption!

The entire pretext of All You Need is Kill is a world that has been in a state of total war for an extended period of time, therefore a combat inexperienced Lt. Col. would probably not exist. Given that almost everyone who goes into combat is killed, they would't send such a high ranked officer into direct combat (Suicide) (in the novel the highest ranked combatant is a technically Rita due to her special circumstances).

No doubt there is a reason in Edge of Tomorrow for this, as I said, we probably need to forget that the book was ever written in order to really enjoy the film. Also there's no need to have a go at someone for making a assumption about the military chain of command in a FICTIONAL world. Who's to say he's not right, maybe it is possible to rise through the ranks in the Edge of Tomorrow universe? Had you considered that?
