It's a shame that they don't see all the different genres out there. It's reports like this one that give manga and anime the stigmatic stereotypes it has had in the past and still carries today. To be fair, there are a small number of reports that have been done that talk about shoujo (Marmalade Boy in Time magazine IIRC) but they seem to show up infrequently. Moreso, people are more likely in general to remember the negative aspects of reports and falsely brand an entire medium as being bad.

The BBC guy seemed to think that manga's popularity in Japan is purely as an escape from that country's overly-polite and restrictive public culture. If so, then how does one explain the growing popularity of manga in "loose" countries like the USA? The item acknowledged manga cosplay but the tone was arch, like "Gosh, aren't these Japanese weird, dressing up as comic book characters?"

It's a common failing of radio/TV journalism, these attempts to try and cover a complex subject in a couple of minutes. (^_*)
