Oh great first Yen press/Hachette (although I understand it's a different situation), now Amazon is disabling pre-orders from Viz Media, what's going on with Amazon?? Shocked Confused

I shop from them (well not anime or manga related), and I never seen Amazon in my experience acting like a "dick", spoiler[please pardon my "french", to moderators or anyone that is easily offended by that word.]

I can understand to some degree that the Hachette/Amazon s***storm that's currently afoot is a different beast, but to see Viz being hurt by a seemingly similar setback does nothing to dispel my worries and frustration with the online juggernaut.

I never made a habit of buying anime/manga from them - I wanted to support smaller retailers/specialists like RightStuf - but I know a considerable number of people do. I've little doubt Viz and Yen Press's sales will be hurt by this as a result. Sad

Personally I don't care, as I stopped buying any anime or manga from Amazon at least a year ago. Other companies give better service and better packaging, which a few years ago I wouldn't have thought possible.

But I got tired of Amazon new method of shipping DVD/Blu-rays in thinly padded envelopes, instead of boxes, trusting to the kind mercies of the post office -- which resulted many times in my having to get a replacement. Sure, Amazon makes replacements easy, but they used to make them rare.

It's also getting difficult to find things on Amazon that are actually sold by Amazon, instead of a "partner". They've become eBay without the pesky auctions.

The last straw for me came when they started using private shipping companies (other than UPS or FedEx, I mean) here in the U.S. to move packages from their warehouses to the local post offices (where the post office would handle the last section of delivery). I didn't think a private shipping company could ever be found that loses more packages than the post office itself, but by god they found one! Free shipping is not a value when you have to wait weeks for them to admit it was lost, and ship another one.

Hopefully more people will realize that there are other places to get anime and manga from than Amazon, and shift their business.

Rightstuf is the only place to shop for the best anime/manga experience. To hell with amazon.

mdo: I wouldn't be surprised if Comcast is effing with Amazon like they did with Netflix.

Ashen: Warner's handling distribution, and they're a lot bigger than Hachette. So I imagine that dispute should be resolved soon, at least. Especially since no one wants this to screw up the home vid release of Sailor Moon.

This sort of "small cuts" negotiating tactic does no real good for Amazon, in fact it hurts them by making them appear petty.

There is something wrong with Amazon management's thinking if they believe that in the end the won't find themselves having to explain their actions to some Judge / Legislator / Bureaucrat.

You know the reason why amazon doesn't want to sell Hachette book because the price is too high. Amazon wants to Hachette to sell them cheaper, otherwise Amazon won't sell it at all.

The sad thing is that the only loser to come out of this, are companies like Yen and Viz that are already publishing such niche stuff :/

There are plenty of "Amazon or bust" shoppers, out there...

True, but this is the first time (in my experience and opinion) that Amazon is acting like this.

Well I've seen some really expensive stuff on Amazon, I don't see how Hachette Book being expensive would be any different from other overpriced stuff I've seen on Amazon.

Well there's plenty of other online shopping site other then Amazon, so people are not out of option. the "Amazon or bust" shoppers that you claim, probably too lazy or too much of a fanboy/fangirl to use other shopping method. If I'm not happy with Amazon, then I go shopping elsewhere.

If Amazon win, i win. I want cheap stuffs.
and it hopes smaller players.

"All the anti-Amazon stuff lately would have you believe that Amazon is squeezing all of the publishers," Shepard told Business Insider. "I don't know what they do with the big guys, but for us, what Amazon has created is the best outcome that one could possibly deal with."

Shepard feels that Amazon has democratized the book market: He says that small publishers no longer need to buy publicity, because their books will get just as much room online as Hachette titles.

"They're preserving a literary culture, not just best sellers," he says. "This is a very good thing."

Of the more than 2,000 publishers in the U.S., Shepard argues that the smaller ones like his love Amazon because it builds in marketing .....

When you send orders to a store, distributor or wholesaler, publishers can count on returns of 20 to 80%. If Amazon orders books (which they do in increasingly larger numbers) it’s rare to get more than one or two percent returned. They are masters at this and consequently enable us to cut-down on our print runs.

I use both Amazon and RightStuf pretty interchangeably when it comes to getting anime & manga online, depending on which is cheaper. I've also used Barnes & Noble, FYE, and Wal-Mart. I am annoyed with all this stuff that Amazon's been pulling. It's annoying as hell. I have a Prime account, and have one for free with a student membership, but I'm still thinking about if to keep it once my 6-month trial expires.

Unfortunately though, Amazon is pretty essential when selling physical media online. It's the first place people go online when they want to buy pretty much anything.

This little spat in particular is annoying because mainstream Warner Bros. titles like The Lego Movie and The Outsiders (on Blu-ray) are also affected, and it could seriously affect their sales.

warner bros distributes for viz.

I am sure they have already been given an unfavorable deal arrangement but this is actually the positive side of the agreement.

I seriously doubt amazon will do much pushing around on warner bros which is one of the major film studios in america and viz does not have to lift a finger, they just need to sit back and wait.

Sadly, I don't think many mainstreamers know about places like Rightstuf. I've brought it up a few times to anime fans I know and they've never even heard of it. But, tons of people like Amazon Prime with the 2-day shipping and not needing a set amount to get shipped for free.
