I have one problem with this movie: It's not enjoyable. I mean the story is not enjoyable. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, unlike most movies made from shounen series. It's just too filled with suffering for Fairy Tail. I think that's why it flopped in Japan. For once, the power of friendship solved absolutely nothing.

too much cliche. Only the fans of the series should watch this crap.

What?! B+ in animation?! There is TV series with better animation than this one. The animation in fairy tail is so damn simple.

But the worst part is the STORY. How can it receives a B?! Animenewsnetwork go watch other animes to know what it's a plot. The music is obviously the best part of the movie just like the TV series.

My Review:

Overall (dub) : C+
Overall (sub) : B-
Story : C+
Animation : B-
Art : B-
Music : B

First off, as a critic, that is not a review. It is a grammatically awful rant with arbitrary grades slapped onto it. Second off, they explain and justify their points. Don't like it? Too bad. Opinions are subjective.

Sometimes Carl's reviews are bang on and sometimes they are simply hopelessly moronic. Sadly, this one falls into the hopelessly moronic category. I'm a huge FT fan and I couldn't get through more than the first 25 minutes of this cinematic snoozefest. Mind you, I was watching it as an non-legit stream so I will give it a second chance by picking up the official release during some future sale.

What I saw before giving into boredom seemed sorely lacking in the humour, fun and energy I associate with a lot of Fairy Tail the TV series.

Not to mention that a statement like this:

Quote:
Brighter, funnier, cooler, prettier, more heartfelt, more stylistically faithful, and just plain better than the TV series; a good-hearted, immensely fun little film.

... is simply retarded. There is no way any 85-minute movie is going to be all those things compared to a 175-episode TV series (if you don't count FT 2). Funnier and cooler than the Edolas arc, for example? Bitch, please. Only a mental defective with absolutely abysmal taste would really think that. I wonder how much of the FT series Carl has actually seen. Not much, I would guess.

Not to mention that the above statement makes no sense when combined with judgment just below it in the review:

Quote:
Is essentially a filler arc crammed into an 85-minute timeframe

So wait, a filler arc crammed into 85 minutes is "funnier, cooler, prettier, more heartfelt...and just plain better than the TV series."

I would recommend, in the future, that Carl refrain from getting high while writing a review.

And you're not that far off actually. I checked and of the reviews of the TV series releases. He only did the most recent one (that'd be sets 7 & 8).

Although that only tells us what he has reviewed. For all we know, he's watched more than that on his own time. I hope not, though. I'd rather think his bizarre take stems from ignorance rather than incompetence.

eta: just read Carl's review of Parts 7 & 8 and I see what the problem is now. Carl is taking the, "source material is godlike, anime adaptation is crap" angle. Sigh. That explains why he reviewed Phoenix so favourably: he can't fall back on the lazy, "manga, great; anime, lousy" paradigm and so was forced to review it on its own merits (as he sees them) as opposed to comparing the manga and anime content in his head.

Really good review, makes me more hyped to finally watch it when Manga UKs release rolls around.

There's one thing that I don't agree on here: He said it was funnier. I don't remember a damn funny thing about this movie. All I remember is the mean tone and the suffering.

I don't remember a total lack of humour from the chunk I saw, just less humour than I am used to from a FT property.

Blood-, I know you're in, what, your 40s? Could you at least try to disagree with a review without sounding like an angry poo-flinging teenager?

Again, I'm kinda surprised to hear another review that seems to take issue with Fairy Tails pacing.

Now everyone has their own idea what good pacing is I imagine. I thought Attack on Titan moved at fine pace, but apparently that was just me. I think Fairy Tail's pacing, when compared to the like of Naruto, Bleach, and sometimes One Piece, is fantastic. It moves from arc to arc well, a lot of battles rarely go on for more than an single episode, conversations move fluidly without rushing. I mean, with a lot of shonen anime, I have trouble mistaking cannon material for filler. (Really, did we need another long flashback from Sakura's point of view, with silhouettes of Naruto and Sasuke just standing behind her, for an entire episode? Did we really?)

But, again, maybe that's just me.

Wow -- interesting how widely the reaction to this piece is among self-acknowledged fans. I thought the review was reasonable.

These kinds of shows always have a problem with balance. One guy expects more humor, another thinks it was ruined by not enough action, and yet another laments the lack of romance. (Lucy full length nude from the rear? How much more romance than that do you need?)

So yes Phoenix Priestess dragged here and there but it did have enough story to be the equivalent of a 4-5 episode arc in the regular season and it had most of the elements that makes FT so enjoyable to watch and each character in the ensemble gets a decent amount of screen time.

So at the end of the day I'm lined up with Carl on this one.
