Man, I was expecting Slam Dunk to do a little better than that since it pretty much single handedly popularized basketball in Japan.

A pretty slow week overall though, I guess the effect of the summer holiday is taking shape.

Nothing to do with that, this week just barely had any new releases.

2,000+ units doesn't seem too bad for a 90's series, it's already been released on DVD multiple times in Japan and the BDs are just upscales (not that I expect many Slam Dunk fans to be huge videophiles).

Slam Dunk did better than Dragonball Kai, at any rate: http://dvdbd.wiki.fc2.com/wiki/ドラゴンボール

Next week a giant launches. Frozen will probably sell a lot better on DVD than BD, but it should still be big. Oricon reported that it had 1.5 million preorders.

Nice to see Seitokai Yakuindomo* made the list. I hope they keep going with production of their show, its humor is pretty good.

People are surprised Disney Japan didn't move the release date back due to the surprising long legs in the box office. Just until last weekend Frozen was #1 for 4 straight months.

Even if the BDs already out, what's wrong if people still wanna see it in theaters?

There's less incentive for people to bother with the theaters.

I'm not sure how ticket sales are split in Japan, but discs have far fatter profit margins there than here, so they're not the poison you're thinking they are, especially if Japan also reduces the studio's cut of the ticket sales as time passes.
