So I heard awhile there was another version of the final episode where half of it wasn't flashbacks, was that true?

I believe it is extra footage that helps make more sense of the last episode. I seem to remember watching it at some point, but I couldn't really tell you what happened to it other than it clarified the fate of OD (spoiler[he lives, IIRC]). But yes, there is something along the lines of what you're talking about.

After seeing the entirety of the dub a few days ago, I can say that it's very hit-or-miss, with more misses than hits. Hajime's voice gets the eccentric and energetic nature of the character down, but the voice itself is too shrill. Sugano's voice is very relaxed, not at all fitting with the stick-up-his-ass attitude he has in the first half of the show. OD is good for the most part, but later on in the show when he gets more serious, spoiler[his voice doesn't change at all, unlike the JP voice actor.] Utsu-tsu is terrible. Her voice wasn't "cutesy" in the original either, but her dub voice just sounds WAY too old. Joe's voice is just...there. It doesn't leave any impact whatsoever. Rui has a couple of awkward deliveries here and there, but it's mostly decent. Pai-man is perfect. Berg-Katze isn't quite as hammy as in the original version, but it's still a very well-done role.

So, a mostly mediocre dub, with one or two stand-out performances. In other words, standard Sentai fare.

I may not be the best at math, but that sounds more like four or five good performances. O_O

Does anyone know if the additional video of the ending will be included in this? The missing climactic battle from the TV series was the only failure for this series. Without it, this is not a must buy for me.

I already have my DVD set, it came in the mail last week from Right Stuf. I wonder - does Sentai Filmworks know that it is shipping when they make an announcement about the cast??

I like how they mirrored what the Japanese did and also casted the VA of Ken The Eagle from the original Gatchaman to play J.J.

Last time I looked into this, the answer appeared to be no. The Crunchyroll version was never updated, and from what I read, Sentai is using the same version as CR. I haven't a clue why they would choose to use the obviously inferior version of episode twelve when the replacement came out in Japan months ago.

I suspect it's a licensing issue (or rather, I suspect the director's cut of the final episode - as a home video exclusive that never aired - would be a separate license). As I recall there are story elements exclusive to each version of episode 12, so neither the broadcast version nor the director's cut is totally complete without the other one. Frustrating on all counts.

The final episode (13) was in the BD box, I can't see how they licensed it without it.

Evil or Very Mad Aw crap, what the hell Sentai. The Japanese release came with both the broadcast and the director's cut as ep 13 and I noticed Rightstuf's listing only shows 12 ep. There goes my purchase. I'll only buy if they release it together or separately in the future.

Seems like Sentai really does not give a damn, just like with all the missing OVAs/Specials from the JP home video releases in like, half of other Sentai titles. And thing is, this was known from the beginning or planned early on, since that ep 13 was released in the first volume if I recall.

This also makes me suspect if they are using the broadcast masters instead of the home video version for ep 1-12.

I haven't watched the show (besides maybe clips) although I understand that Sentai has had various so so dubs. My question, does any one feel if any of this show's Japanese voices are so so that are better with the dub?

They need to work on their timing a little better for these dub announcements. The show has been available streaming for a while and the cast has been widely known. On the other hand, they've got us talking about what is essentially old news, so maybe they should re-announce the cast for every show over and over again.

I think the Japanese cast was super strong. OD was a little grating at first, but that's more of his character than anything (English is the same). This isn't one of Sentai's sloppy dubs and I wouldn't warn against it, especially for dub fans, but it still has a tough time stacking up against the Japanese.

Others are saying there are only 12 episodes in Sentai's box. I can believe it, this is not the first time a western company has claimed ignorance, or say they found out too late to include it.

But unlike other OVAs, this one is pertinent to the final episode.
