I thought Zun didn't want any anime of Touhou free or paid. Id rather see a studio do something if he has changed his mind.

From the sounds of things, Zun wouldn't agree to let an official anime be produced. He created Touhou for his own sake, and handing off the creative process to some company would inevitably take away his control. We're talking about a guy who did virtually everything to make the Touhou Project games all by himself, even going so far as to compose its own unique in-game music.

People unfamiliar with the Touhou Project will look at its characters and try to insert them in undesirable anime stereotypes. An official anime (as in, something produced outside of Doujin circles) would most likely be a disaster (or 'incident', am I right?) and the existing fan-base would be outraged. So it's better-off staying away from the mainstream anime industry. Doujin circles, whether they produce their own short anime or remix soundtracks from the games, spread the Touhou brand in a positive way and attract new fans (especially outside of Japan, where the games aren't available, except through pirating).

Touhou will always be a niche title(s), primarily because some of its earliest games (and most well known ones) exist in limited quantities and/or cannot be played on modern computers. Personally I would love to see a compilation of some of the earlier games on one disk, perhaps with an English language for North America, and an official release (essentially, proper distribution).

No he doesn't mind what fans do. It's only large studios (aka what UFOtable did without permission). You don't need a big box anime studio to make an anime. This looks amazing and it's done by fans.

One could argue this has already happened, as since its a predominant are almost all female cast, a lot of the stuff associated with Touhou is the characters in various yuri situations, which is about as generic as it comes.

I understand, and I guess I respect him, but he is leaving a lot of money on the table probably, and I would rather see him get paid at the expense of some freedom by various circles, although I guess he probably makes decent money on Touhou in other ways.

I would at least like to see the games released in some official physical compilation, maybe on the ps4, one, or PC here in the US.

Also I disagree on the comment about fan made anime, it will always look cheap because anime is expensive, there is a reason the sets costs as much as they do in Japan. Sure you can come up with a good plot, and make it look okay, but some cheap flash is probably the limit.

Also since Zun allows the characters and verse to be open to interpretation, what would it matter if a studio made its own version. Those who want to see a professional done version could, and the rest could just write it off. I don't really see the problem.
