I am truly saddened by the news. Hirata is a wonderful director who is also criminally under appreciated. Bobby's in Deep is a visually stunning film that everyone should see.

The fine director of such gems as the second Barefoot Gen movie, Ichigo 100% and Petshop of Horrors.

May he rest in peace.

"Bobby's Girl" (or "Bobby's in Deep" as the poster above called it by its alternate title) is quite the oddity. I came across it after the Anime World Order guys reviewed it, and it's '80s in every way an OVA from that era can be (right on down to the weird '50s-retro pop-culture thing that was happening in the '80s). Worth watching for its wonderful animation, though.

While it's sad when anyone passes away, there's a certain comfort in knowing Hirata was active and engaged right up until the end. RIP.

Really sad news. We need a column on him. I'm familiar with the name but was not aware of his accomplishment. RIP.

He is not exactly one of the biggest names in anime, but people that have had some years in the fandom have probably seen at least one of his works.
May he rest in peace.
