I doubt the manga-ka meant as a political thing.

This is a terrible comparison. Unlike the show/manga. Reality has no plot armor or baiting gimmick with its story. This is real. If Eren and Mikasa were in this situation, they would already be dead.

Idiots. There IS no parallel. It's not even remotely close.

You can see a hidden political message in anything, if you try hard enough. Amazingly (!) it will be the exact political message you agree with.

So, 'It's totally like Attack on Titan' is becoming a yearly thing for Hong Kong's protestors?

The manga-ka who based a character design up on a Japanese war criminal? Well, I doubt he meant anything like this.

Yeah, I mean here they are risking imprisonment or worse over something as silly as political reform and freedom.

I don't think anyone's calling them idiots over that. They are calling them idiots for the AoT comparisons. That's NOT how you get taken seriously by outside views.

I think relating to characters and their struggle is a key part of fiction. So they are simply stating that the view their situation like the characters of AOT. Being the small man vs a large country.

Sure it won't help them get support, but I don't think that's why they said it. They said it because that's honestly how they feel and they are relating the series to their situation. It might not be the best comparison but I'm sure they aren't idiots for thinking so.

I agree, and I don't think Liu meant to suggest that Isayama wrote the manga to represent Hong Kong's relationship with China. Notice that I used phrases like "see parallels with," "draw comparisons with" and "is sympathetic to."

Also I tried to imply that she drew the comparison when she found out she was being interviewed by a Japanese (which is what the original article implied).

Exactly, Liu used Attack on Titan as a reference for a Japanese news site because she felt it would be easy for Japanese people to get the analogy.

Attack on Titan is just today's David vs. Goliath story, it can be used by anyone to describe any struggle.

And that is the part that connects world cultures, the simple concept of struggling for survival can be understood in pretty much any modern culture, this is part of the reason why Titan has been able to sell well outside of its home country.

There are an almost endless amount of media that one could apply the parallel of struggling against oppressors, that's what history books are made of, but if the flavor of the month is Japanese manga with characters being attacked by giants then so be it.

Makes sense as an allegory, a bunch of little people fighting against the tyrannical red giants of a Communist government.

Relax guy...
