Tomino getting Tomino'd is a really weird sense of irony Laughing

Of course I'm still waiting on a US simulcast of Reconguista and haven't seen past ep 1 so not sure what to make of it getting ripped on

"I can't figure out what's going on"

Isn't that the entire point of Gundam?

I watched episodes 1 and 2 of Reconguista and I kinda see what he is talking about, while the anime looks cool, very 80's, the dialogue is all over the place in parts. Some characters say stuff that don't go with the context of the scene they are in and the exposition is there for the sake of exposition. I stopped watching after that. I'm not saying it's horrible but it's not really my kind of anime.

Tomino is bogglingly awful.

I have a soft spot for Gundam, so decided to watch a bit of it. I was a little lukewarm with how it started, but I have to agree after the last episode I was left a little confused with what was going on. I'm not sure I'm interested in continuing any further watching the show now.

We are only 4 episodes in, how exactly are you going to make sense of this anime? This is Gundam, not some cookie cuter anime that places totally "nonchalant" descriptions of what's going on in the dialogue every minute, I'm wondering what it is that this guy is "expecting" exactly because this is the norm for Gundam, as for the kids, don't really care about em Laughing, never met a kid in my life besides me that even likes mecha anyway.

...w-well I like it. ._.

I've long liked his stylings in general, and this definitely goes in hard on the "drop you in the middle of things and let you figure out" approach (it literally opens in the middle of something happening with no explanation). I do get the feeling that's part of the point of the story, here in particular. So far, I'm just enjoying piecing things together. I'm glad to be back in the sort of lively feeling world his shows tend to have.

And oh boy, this show is real pretty, too.

Well i like it. The show reminds me of Turn A Gundam. There is way worse out there this season from sunrise and Mr. Kill Them All is probably laughing about this rigth now. The toilet scenes may even be a metaphor. For what i don´t know.

I view Reconguista as almost a parody of 70s anime. It uses deliberately old school art style and production elements, and yes, the plot makes no damned sense on any level, but I think it's just mean to be that way, simplistic and quirky. It's entertaining on that level.

Are you saying that an anime making sense in the first four episodes makes it cookie cutter? FFS, Penguindrum and Kyousogiga made more sense in the first four episodes than Reconguista does and those shows are hardly "cookie-cutter." Hell, I've watched pretty much every Gundam show and this one is one of the most confusing, poorly-paced Gundam shows Tomino's ever written, and that's coming from someone who considers Turn-A to be one of the best in the franchise.

I could not have said it better Ohoni. Tomino is having one last nostalgic trip down memory lane. ZZ, all of Seed, OO the movie, F91 and AGE are worse.

Too bad, since I really like the show a lot. It's only past Ep. 4 and Turn A Gundam itself took its time to get the ball going, IIRC not until the latter teen eps., and was still great all the way through. Bits and pieces of the world are being brought together with each passing episode, so I wouldn't get that bent out of shape over it this early.

For some of the same reasons Okada dislikes G-Reco, though, I liked it, especially the dialouge (one of my favorite aspects of Tomino's work). Everything in the show is very much in-line with Tomino's style in terms of that and direction, and the laid-back, casual style of it has been present more strongly in his post-Kill-'Em-All works.

It's pretty clear that Tomino is just having fun making the series and it shows (his comments about how the series would be a couple of months ago and Ep. 3 alone are enough). Personally, I think the show is very fun to watch, and it has shown it can get serious without it feeling out-of-place. That said, I'm not all that surprised that there is some wariness or negativity over the series. It's weird and sometimes rough around the edges (chiefly in the first two episodes), but it's also pure, complete Happy Tomino, and Tomino-in-general--for better for some, for worse for others, no surprise.

Not really, that is just a later Tomino thing. Most of the series set things up pretty quickly.

The issue I have with the throwback to old school animation is that while it may look kinda like old school animation, it doesn't look like old school gundam. Kind of defeats any benefit of making it look old school.

I would say Gundam UC is actually a better throwback to how gundam use to look than this is even though it is new and shiny because the designs are in line with something you could see in old school gundam. But when I look at this, I just see low quality frames and not 'oh hey its old school gundam'.
