I wouldn't say that newer adaptations ALWAYS bomb in the West; the Black Jack OAVs did fairly well back in the day...

Despite of or more likely regardless of the "classic" connection? Most of the Black Jack OVAs have great atmosphere which is what I'd assume grabs people.

I don't currently use a cell phone for the exact same reason I don't currently have cable, lack of money, but, when I do use a cell phone, it's a flip phone. And I'm fine with that. I only use it to make phone calls (and occasionally as a backup camera), I'm not interested in most smartphone features or their hefty service fees, and I especially like the amazing flip phone "special feature" that I can drop it on a hard surface repeatedly and still be able to use it.

And I don't feel self-conscious about still using a flip phone either. I mean, I still use a CD Walkman (I'm a total physical media guy) on the bus. I like the feeling that I'm not at all suspicious that anyone else wants to steal my phone.

Feature phone? What's that when it's at home?

Aren't them there sumahos pretty common in recent anime? Maybe the person was watching some stuff from a few years back when the flips were still the phone of choice.

How about a flip-smapho? Wouldn't that combine the best of both worlds? Anime smile

Ideally also without the OS/app-store lock-in, but that's probably asking too much :/

Cyborg while not that popular does seem to have what I call a nostalgic following here in the states, as one of the series did air on Toonami.

Last year one of my best friends who's a huge Cyborg fan cosplayed as Jet at Fanime last year and got a the reaction "I remember that show!" a lot. It's actually pretty funny...

I wish somebody would re-license Cyborg 009 (I want to see the God's War OVA dubbed) and Kikaider, heck I want the Black Jack OVAs. I'm hoping Discotek will eventually acquire these.

I'd say it's, at best, 50/50 these days. (Which is reasonably common, but nowhere near the 99% saturation we have in the U.S...) Sounds like the statistics from reality match that pretty well.

This season, Yuki Yuna has everyone using smartphones, since there's lots of elaborately animated text-messaging. But that accidental-upskirt gag in Your Lie In April was done with a flip-phone. The Madoka Rebellion movie had smartphones (but the series doesn't have cellphones at all), and that SNAFU overly-long-title anime had one (but I think only loner protagonist guy had one, seemingly to emphasize his antisocialness). I only remember all of those because it's still somewhat unusual.

Had to upgrade my non-smart feature phone this week (I've got something for Wi-Fi, it's called an iPad), and almost got a flip-phone, just for the psychological "Three to beam up, Scotty" quality of it. Smile
Ended up going with a keyboard-pad phone, since I text more than I call.

As for Tezuka, yes: We respect him, but that's not the same as actually having to watch his looney, quirky, Disney-enamored stuff for museum value.
Like other vintage shows that get rebooted every decade (Doraemon, Gegege no Kitaro), some actually improve with newer hands, and that's true of BlackJack and Astroboy as well.
Only Leiji Matsumoto has to be watched in the original and ends up ruined in the remakes.

An interesting thing to note is that certain character archetypes are more predisposed to carry around smartphones over their Galapagos counterparts. Trend setters and those of the "privileged" class use 'em. Examples that pop up are Iori from IM@S and one of the MC's friends in Mirai Nikki.

On the other side of the fence we have the characters who have a dumb phone or don't have one at all. They're almost always categorized as out of touch or tech inept. Examples include Chihaya from IM@S again and Ruuko from Wixoss.

I notice a lot of MC's still opt for feature phones which emphasizes on their often pointed views of keeping it simple.

As much to my surprise, not every sumaho user in anime had iPhones. It's more evenly split with Androids. Sorry Windows phone fans.

Doing a character analysis judging by what phone they use...rather amusing.

I don't understand the appeal of a Windows phone, esp. the ones that look like a Windows 8 desktop (I should know since 8 is on my HP). As much as I miss my old PrePaid filp phone from the 2000s (it even had Frogger!), I enjoy using my Android for quick search on Google or for looking up random information while in class. I wouldn't mind importing a flip phone after college just so I can add my cell phone charms.

For Tezuka, specifically, I saw Metropolis at the Japanese Embassy in DC back in high school and, only after looking on ANN, did I realize it was from the same guy who made Astro Boy. So, like Justin said: if there's new or current material made available some people will try to learn more. I just really hope DMP can pass their newest Kickstarter. I would love to own Wonder Three in manga form.

Suddenly Tohko having an outdated flip phone in Akiba's Trip 2 makes sense.

Fun Fact: my current phone, a cheap but solid looking flippy model, is one I picked because it reminded me of the type the characters used towards the beginning of Bakuman (before they switched to iPhones).

I'm a dork. Embarassed

Another bonus feature of flip phones, besides the durability issue I mentioned earlier, is that they're hella-compact. I can fit the Samsung Razor I have in my front left jeans pocket quite comfortably and still have room left for my point-and-shoot digital camera and my house keys and be able to sit down with all that in the same pocket without feeling any discomfort.

I know I wouldn't be able to carry an iPhone or other equivalent device in my front jeans pocket comfortably and without worrying about it bending or without worrying about me bumping into something and breaking the screen without realizing it until I pull it out.

That NYT article you linked to Justin really takes me back to 2004 when I got my first cell-phone, an NEC 525 HDM, it was packed with fantastic features that really did put it on a cusp of being almost Blackberry like which was the gold standard smartphone at the time. I replaced it several years later with an even more feature packed Sony Ericson Walkman series phone that had features like fitness tracking, built in MP3 player (that worked!), and so much more. But both phones shared in common many features there was just no support for like the mobile network TV and the browsers could not really handle the way webpages were built at the time in the US.
